What is a dental implant_

A dental implant is a surgical component that serves as a replacement for a missing tooth root. It is typically made of titanium or a titanium alloy, materials known for their durability and biocompatibility. Dental implants are inserted into the jawbone where the natural tooth root once was, providing a stable foundation for attaching artificial teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures.

The procedure begins with the dentist surgically placing the implant into the jawbone. Over time, the bone integrates with the implant through a process called osseointegration, which typically takes a few months. Once this process is complete, the dentist places a custom-made artificial tooth or crown on top of the implant.

Dental implants offer several advantages over traditional dentures or bridges. They provide a permanent solution to tooth loss, and they help preserve jawbone structure, which can deteriorate when a tooth is missing. Implants also offer better comfort and function, as they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth.

In addition to restoring the ability to chew and speak effectively, dental implants help maintain facial aesthetics by preventing bone loss that might lead to changes in facial appearance. Though the procedure involves a significant investment of time and money, dental implants are widely regarded as one of the most reliable and long-lasting methods for replacing missing teeth.
