How to make a wooden wine glass rack with an under-cabinet mount

Creating a wooden wine glass rack with an under-cabinet mount is a great DIY project. Here’s how to make one step by step:

Materials Needed:

  • Wood (Pine, Oak, or any wood of your choice)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Saw (Circular or Handsaw)
  • Sandpaper (Medium and fine grit)
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • Under-cabinet brackets or mounting hardware
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil
  • Clamps
  • Wine glass holders (store-bought or custom-made)

Instructions:

1. Measure and Plan

  • Decide on the dimensions of your wine glass rack. A typical under-cabinet rack is around 18 inches wide (depending on how many glasses you want to store) and about 6-8 inches deep.
  • Measure the available space under the cabinet to ensure it fits.

2. Cut the Wood

  • Cut the wood to your desired dimensions for the base of the rack. The base will hold the wine glasses, so make sure it’s wide enough to accommodate the number of glasses.
  • If you plan to create slots for the wine glasses to hang from, make additional cuts to create the holders (typically about 1-1.5 inches apart, depending on your glasses’ size).

3. Create Slots for Wine Glasses

  • Use a drill and a hole saw attachment to make circular holes for the stems of the wine glasses to hang in. If you’re creating grooves for the stems, use a router to carve out a narrow channel.
  • Sand the edges of the holes or grooves to make sure the glasses will rest smoothly.

4. Assemble the Rack

  • Once you have the base piece ready, you may want to add a front lip to prevent the glasses from slipping off. This lip can be a small piece of wood attached to the front of the base.
  • Apply wood glue to the joint areas and clamp until secure.

5. Sand and Finish

  • Sand the entire rack smooth using medium and fine-grit sandpaper. Ensure there are no sharp edges where the glasses might be damaged.
  • If you want, you can stain or paint the rack to match your kitchen or bar area decor.

6. Mount the Rack Under the Cabinet

  • Measure and mark where the rack will mount on the underside of the cabinet.
  • Use under-cabinet brackets or a mounting system to secure the rack in place. Depending on the weight of the rack, you may need a few screws to make sure it’s sturdy.

7. Install the Wine Glass Holders

  • If using store-bought wine glass holders, simply screw them into the base. If you’ve made custom slots, just hang your glasses to ensure they fit securely.

Final Tips:

  • If you plan to use the rack for more than just hanging glasses, consider making a small shelf on top to store wine bottles or other barware.
  • Always check the weight tolerance of your under-cabinet space to ensure the rack is securely mounted.
  • Experiment with different types of wood finishes to match your home’s aesthetic.

This project is a functional and stylish way to store wine glasses while keeping your kitchen or bar area organized!
