How to make a wooden toy chest with compartments

Making a wooden toy chest with compartments is a fun woodworking project that allows you to create both a functional and decorative piece. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build one:

Materials Needed:

  • Wood panels (plywood, MDF, or solid wood)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Hinges for the lid
  • Handle or knob for opening (optional)
  • Wood screws
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Saw (circular or miter saw)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood clamps
  • Safety goggles and ear protection

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Plan and Measure

Start by determining the size of your toy chest. A typical toy chest might be around 36 inches wide, 18 inches tall, and 18 inches deep, but you can adjust the dimensions based on your needs.

  • Draw a rough design of your toy chest, including where you want to place the compartments.
  • Measure and cut the pieces accordingly:
    • The bottom panel: Width x Depth.
    • The side panels: Height x Depth (two pieces).
    • The front and back panels: Height x Width (two pieces).
    • Compartment dividers: Height x Depth (cut based on how many compartments you want inside).

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Use a saw to cut all the pieces for your toy chest. Ensure the cuts are straight and precise. If you’re using plywood or MDF, it’s best to use a circular saw. If you’re using solid wood, a miter saw can give you cleaner, more precise cuts.

Step 3: Assemble the Box

  1. Start by assembling the sides of the toy chest to the bottom panel. Apply wood glue to the edges of the bottom panel and then attach the side panels. Secure with screws for added stability.
  2. Attach the front and back panels to the side panels in the same manner, ensuring the box is square.

Step 4: Add the Compartments

  1. Once the box is assembled, measure where you want the compartment dividers to go inside the chest. Typically, they are placed vertically, but you can also have horizontal compartments for larger toys.
  2. Attach the dividers using wood glue and screws. Make sure they are aligned and level.
  3. You can add more dividers to create smaller sections or just a few for larger toys, depending on your preference.

Step 5: Sand the Edges

After the chest is assembled, use sandpaper to smooth the edges and surfaces. Start with medium-grit sandpaper and finish with fine-grit to achieve a smooth, polished finish. Be careful around corners and edges to avoid any splinters.

Step 6: Install the Lid and Hinges

  1. Measure and cut a piece for the lid, ensuring it fits snugly over the top of the chest.
  2. Attach the hinges to the back edge of the lid and the back edge of the chest. Be sure to pre-drill holes for the screws to prevent the wood from splitting.
  3. Make sure the lid opens and closes smoothly.

Step 7: Add Handles or Knobs (Optional)

You can install a handle or knob to make it easier to open and close the lid. Drill a hole in the front of the chest and attach a handle or knob with screws.

Step 8: Finish the Chest

Once everything is assembled and sanded, you can stain or paint the toy chest to match the decor of the room. If you’re using a stain, ensure the wood is clean and dry before applying it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times.

Step 9: Add Safety Features (Optional)

For added safety, you can install a soft-close hinge mechanism or a lid support to prevent the lid from slamming shut. You can also round off any sharp corners with a router to avoid injuries.

Tips:

  • Measure Twice, Cut Once: Always double-check your measurements before making cuts to avoid mistakes.
  • Use Clamps: When attaching pieces together, use wood clamps to hold everything in place until the glue dries.
  • Consider Ventilation: If you’re planning on storing items that might need airflow, consider drilling a few holes in the sides or back panel for ventilation.

Once your toy chest is complete, you can use it to store toys, blankets, or anything else. The compartments will help keep things organized, and the lid will keep everything tidy and out of sight.
