How to Make a Wooden Spice Rack with a Pull-Out Design

A pull-out spice rack is a practical and space-saving solution for organizing your kitchen spices efficiently. Whether you have a small kitchen or just want easy access to your seasonings, a wooden spice rack with a pull-out design is a great DIY woodworking project. This guide will take you through the step-by-step process to create a durable and stylish wooden spice rack.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials

  • Plywood or hardwood (¾-inch thick)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws (1 ¼-inch)
  • Drawer slides (full-extension, 12–18 inches)
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Clear polyurethane finish
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Clamps

Tools

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Drill with bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Sander or sanding block
  • Wood chisel (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Measure and Plan

Before you start cutting, determine where you’ll install the spice rack. Ideal locations include inside a cabinet, between appliances, or even a pull-out rack mounted under a shelf. Measure the available space and decide the dimensions of your spice rack accordingly.

A typical size for a pull-out spice rack is:

  • Height: 18-24 inches
  • Width: 5-8 inches (to fit narrow spaces)
  • Depth: 10-14 inches (depending on cabinet depth)

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a circular saw or table saw, cut the plywood or hardwood into the following pieces:

  • Two Side Panels: These will form the structure of your spice rack. Cut them to the desired height and depth.
  • Top and Bottom Panels: These will connect the side panels and hold everything together.
  • Shelves: Cut as many shelves as needed to store your spice jars. Ensure they are slightly shorter than the width to allow room for the drawer slides.
  • Back Panel (optional): A back panel adds extra stability but is not necessary if mounting inside a cabinet.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Attach the top and bottom panels to the side panels using wood glue and screws.
  2. Ensure the frame is square before tightening screws.
  3. If adding a back panel, secure it in place with nails or screws.

Step 4: Install the Shelves

  1. Mark shelf positions evenly inside the frame. Leave enough space between shelves to accommodate your spice jars.
  2. Secure shelves using wood glue and screws.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

  • Sand all surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper, followed by 220-grit for a smooth finish.
  • Apply wood stain or paint if desired. Let it dry completely.
  • Apply a clear polyurethane coat for added protection.

Step 6: Attach Drawer Slides

  1. Install drawer slides inside the cabinet or designated space. Use a level to ensure they are straight.
  2. Attach the corresponding part of the slides to the sides of the spice rack.
  3. Test the pull-out mechanism to ensure smooth operation.

Step 7: Install and Secure the Rack

  • Insert the spice rack into the slides and test its movement.
  • Make any necessary adjustments to ensure it glides smoothly.

Final Touches

  • Add small wooden rails or lips on the shelves to prevent spice jars from falling.
  • Install a handle or knob for easy pulling.
  • Label shelves or arrange spices by category for better organization.

By following these steps, you’ll have a custom pull-out wooden spice rack that maximizes storage and keeps your kitchen neat.
