How to make a wooden sliding drawer for under-sink storage

Creating a wooden sliding drawer for under-sink storage is a practical project that can help organize and maximize space. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own wooden sliding drawer:

Materials Needed:

  • 1/2-inch plywood (or any suitable wood)
  • Drawer slides (full-extension or side-mounted)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Drawer pull or handle
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (table saw, circular saw, or jigsaw)
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood finish (optional)
  • Safety goggles and ear protection

Step 1: Measure the Space

Before starting, measure the under-sink area where the drawer will go. You need to account for the width, depth, and height of the space. It’s best to leave some space around the drawer for the slides to function properly.

  • Width: Measure the width of the space to determine how wide your drawer will be.
  • Depth: Measure the depth from the front of the cabinet to the back.
  • Height: Determine how tall the drawer should be based on the available space.

Step 2: Cut the Pieces

Cut the plywood pieces according to the measurements you took earlier:

  1. Drawer Sides (2 pieces): Cut to the height and depth of the drawer.
  2. Drawer Front and Back (2 pieces): Cut to the width of the drawer.
  3. Drawer Bottom (1 piece): Cut to the width and depth of the drawer (this piece will sit inside the sides, front, and back).

Make sure the cuts are precise for the drawer to fit well in the space and glide smoothly.

Step 3: Assemble the Drawer

  1. Glue and Screw the Sides: Use wood glue to attach the two side pieces to the front and back pieces. Then, reinforce the joints with screws to ensure a sturdy connection.
  2. Attach the Bottom: After the sides are assembled, place the bottom piece inside the frame and secure it with screws or nails along the edges. This will add stability to the drawer.
  3. Sand the Edges: Smooth any rough edges or surfaces with sandpaper to ensure no splinters and a neat appearance.

Step 4: Install the Drawer Slides

Drawer slides allow the drawer to slide in and out smoothly. Here’s how to install them:

  1. Mark the Position for the Slides: On the sides of the drawer, mark where the slides will go. Typically, the slides are mounted about 1/2-inch from the top and bottom edges of the drawer sides.
  2. Install the Drawer Slides on the Drawer: Attach the corresponding parts of the drawer slides to the sides of the drawer using screws. Make sure they are level and straight.
  3. Install the Slides in the Cabinet: Position the other part of the slides inside the cabinet where the drawer will be installed. Mark their position and screw them into place.
  4. Test the Drawer: Insert the drawer into the cabinet to test the functionality of the slides. Ensure that the drawer slides in and out smoothly. Adjust if necessary.

Step 5: Add a Drawer Pull

Once the drawer is in place and functioning well, install a drawer pull or handle on the front of the drawer. This can be done by screwing a pull into the center or side of the front panel.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

If desired, you can finish the wood with a wood stain or clear finish to protect it from moisture and give it a polished look. Apply the finish in thin coats, sanding between each coat for a smooth surface.

Step 7: Install the Drawer

Finally, slide the drawer back into place in the cabinet. Make sure it opens and closes smoothly and is stable.

Tips:

  • Use full-extension slides for maximum access to the drawer’s contents.
  • Ensure there’s enough space around the drawer for easy operation.
  • If the under-sink area has plumbing pipes, take care to measure around them so the drawer can still function.

This project is a great way to add some storage under your sink while maintaining a clean, organized look.
