How to Make a Wooden Plant Stand with a Rotating Base

A wooden plant stand with a rotating base is a fantastic addition to any home, allowing for easy access to sunlight and convenient watering. This guide will take you through the step-by-step process of making a stylish and functional rotating plant stand.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • ¾-inch plywood or solid hardwood for the base and top platform
  • 1×2 or 2×2 wooden boards for the legs
  • A lazy Susan bearing (6-12 inches diameter, depending on the size)
  • Wood screws (1.5-inch and 2-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Polyurethane sealant (optional)

Tools:

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Jigsaw (if making a round top)
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Sander or sanding block
  • Paintbrush (if finishing with stain or paint)

Step 1: Designing and Cutting the Pieces

Determine the Size

Before cutting, decide how large you want your plant stand to be. A standard size is about 12-18 inches in diameter and 24 inches high, but you can adjust based on your needs.

Cut the Top Platform

  • If making a circular top, use a jigsaw to cut a round piece from the plywood.
  • If making a square top, cut a piece to the desired dimensions using a circular saw or table saw.
  • Sand the edges and surface smooth.

Cut the Base and Legs

  • Cut another piece of wood for the base (same shape and size as the top).
  • For the legs, cut four equal-length pieces from the 1×2 or 2×2 boards, ensuring they are sturdy enough to support the weight of the plant.

Step 2: Assembling the Frame

Attach the Legs

  • Position the legs at equal distances around the edge of the base.
  • Use wood glue and screws to secure each leg in place.
  • If using a square top, attach the legs directly at each corner.
  • For additional support, you can install horizontal cross braces between the legs.

Attach the Top

  • Align the top platform with the legs.
  • Secure it using wood glue and screws from the underside.

Step 3: Installing the Rotating Base

Attach the Lazy Susan Bearing

  1. Mark the Center: Find the center of both the top and base pieces.
  2. Pre-Drill Holes: Many lazy Susan bearings come with pre-drilled holes. Mark and drill holes accordingly.
  3. Attach to the Base: Secure one side of the lazy Susan bearing to the bottom base using screws.
  4. Attach the Top Platform: Carefully align the top with the bearing and secure it with screws. Ensure the stand rotates smoothly.

Step 4: Sanding and Finishing

  • Sand all surfaces and edges using 120-220 grit sandpaper to remove rough spots.
  • Apply wood stain or paint according to your preference.
  • For durability, seal the wood with polyurethane or another protective finish.

Step 5: Testing and Using the Stand

  • Place your plant on the stand and test the rotation.
  • If necessary, adjust the screws or bearing for smooth movement.

By following these steps, you’ll have a beautiful, functional wooden plant stand with a rotating base that adds convenience and style to your indoor or outdoor space.
