How to make a wooden pet ramp for small dogs

Building a wooden pet ramp for small dogs is a great project for providing your furry friends with easy access to furniture or vehicles. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a sturdy, functional, and safe wooden ramp for your dog.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need:

Materials:

  • 1 piece of plywood (around ¾ inch thick and 24 inches wide)
  • 2 wooden planks (approximately 4 feet in length, 1×4)
  • 2 shorter wooden planks (approximately 1 foot in length, 1×4)
  • Wood screws (1 ½ to 2-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (fine grit)
  • Paint or stain (optional, for finishing)
  • Carpet or non-slip material (optional for safety)

Tools:

  • Saw (circular saw or jigsaw)
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Clamp
  • Level
  • Paintbrush (if staining or painting)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Measure the Space

Start by measuring the height of the place your dog needs to reach. This could be the side of a couch, bed, or a car. A typical ramp height ranges from 12 to 24 inches. Measure the width of the area to ensure that the ramp is wide enough for your dog to comfortably walk up.

2. Cut the Plywood Base

Using a circular saw or jigsaw, cut the plywood to the desired length. For small dogs, a 36-inch ramp is typically sufficient, but if you need a steeper incline, a longer ramp may be necessary. The width of the ramp should be about 16 to 20 inches for smaller dogs, providing them with enough space to walk comfortably.

3. Create the Ramp’s Support Frame

Take the two longer wooden planks (1×4) and cut them to the length of the ramp base. These will serve as the side supports for the ramp. Lay the plywood down and attach these side supports with wood screws or wood glue along both edges.

  • First, apply wood glue to the edges of the plywood.
  • Use screws to attach the side supports to the plywood. Ensure the screws are evenly spaced along both edges.
  • Make sure the side supports are aligned straight and level. Clamp the pieces together if necessary to hold them in place while screwing them in.

4. Build the Ramp’s Stand

Cut the two shorter wooden planks (1×4) to about 12 inches in length. These will form the base legs of the ramp that provide support at the bottom. Attach these planks vertically to the ends of the ramp’s side supports, ensuring the ramp stands at the desired angle.

  • Position the shorter planks so they are perpendicular to the plywood.
  • Use screws or wood glue to attach them securely.

If you prefer, you can add additional support beams across the bottom of the ramp to enhance stability, especially if your dog is on the larger side.

5. Angle the Ramp

The angle of the ramp is crucial for your dog’s comfort and safety. To create a gentle incline, measure the angle based on your dog’s size and ability to navigate the ramp. A common angle is around 18 to 25 degrees for small dogs. You can use a level to ensure the ramp sits at the correct angle and adjust the height of the legs as needed to achieve the perfect incline.

6. Sand the Edges

Once the basic structure is in place, thoroughly sand the entire ramp, paying special attention to the edges. You want to make sure there are no rough spots or splinters that could hurt your dog. Sanding will also make the surface more comfortable for them to walk on.

7. Finish with Paint or Stain (Optional)

If you want to finish your ramp with paint or wood stain, now is the time to do so. Applying a finish not only enhances the appearance but also adds protection to the wood, making it last longer. Choose a non-toxic paint or stain, as your pet will come in contact with the surface.

8. Add Non-Slip Material

To make sure your dog doesn’t slip while using the ramp, add a layer of non-slip material like carpet or rubber. You can cut a piece of carpet or use a non-slip rubber mat and attach it to the surface of the ramp using staples or adhesive.

  • Place the carpet or non-slip material on the ramp’s surface.
  • Secure it by stapling or gluing it down. Make sure there are no loose ends or bumps that could cause discomfort for your dog.

9. Test the Ramp

Before you let your dog use the ramp, give it a test. Make sure it is stable, the incline feels comfortable, and the surface is smooth. Walk up and down the ramp yourself to ensure it holds weight and doesn’t wobble.

10. Train Your Dog

Introduce the ramp to your dog slowly, using treats or toys to encourage them to walk up and down. It may take some time for them to get used to it, so be patient and gentle during the training process.

Final Thoughts:

With this DIY wooden pet ramp, your small dog will have a comfortable way to access high places without the strain on their joints. Whether it’s for getting on the couch, bed, or a vehicle, your pet will appreciate the added convenience and safety.
