How to Make a Wooden Pencil Case with a Sliding Lid

A wooden pencil case with a sliding lid is a great woodworking project that combines functionality with craftsmanship. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced woodworker, this project will enhance your skills in precision cutting, sanding, and assembling. Follow this step-by-step guide to create a beautiful and durable wooden pencil case.

Materials and Tools Required

Materials

  • Hardwood or plywood (¼ inch thick)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120, 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or finish
  • Wax or small knob (optional for easier sliding lid)

Tools

  • Saw (table saw, bandsaw, or hand saw)
  • Clamps
  • Router (for lid groove)
  • Chisels (if needed for fine adjustments)
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Drill (optional for knob installation)

Step 1: Plan and Measure the Dimensions

The size of your pencil case depends on the number of pencils or items you want to store. A standard size is:

  • Length: 8 inches
  • Width: 3 inches
  • Height: 2 inches

Mark your wood pieces accordingly before cutting.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Cut the following pieces from your wood board:

  • Base: 8″ x 3″
  • Two Long Sides: 8″ x 2″
  • Two Short Sides: 3″ x 2″
  • Lid: 8″ x 3″ (slightly thinner to allow smooth sliding)

Ensure all cuts are precise for a snug fit.

Step 3: Cut the Groove for the Sliding Lid

Use a router or table saw to cut a groove on the inner side of the two long sides and one short side. The groove should:

  • Be ⅛ inch deep
  • Be slightly wider than the thickness of your lid
  • Run along the top inside edge

This groove will allow the lid to slide smoothly.

Step 4: Assemble the Box

  • Apply wood glue to the edges of the base and attach the sides.
  • Use clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries.
  • Ensure all edges are flush before letting the glue set.
  • Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth.

Allow the box to dry for at least 2-4 hours.

Step 5: Fit the Sliding Lid

  • Test the lid by inserting it into the groove.
  • If the fit is too tight, sand the edges slightly.
  • If desired, attach a small wooden knob at one end for easier sliding.

Step 6: Sand and Finish

  • Use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth all edges.
  • Follow up with 220-grit sandpaper for a fine finish.
  • Apply wood stain or clear finish to protect the wood and enhance its appearance.

Step 7: Final Assembly and Testing

Once the finish is dry:

  • Insert the lid and ensure it slides smoothly.
  • Apply a small amount of wax to the groove for better movement.

Your handmade wooden pencil case is now complete!
