How to make a wooden nightstand with a drawer and an open shelf

To make a wooden nightstand with a drawer and an open shelf, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process. The nightstand will consist of a rectangular base, a drawer section, and an open shelf below. This project will require some basic woodworking tools and materials.

Materials Needed:

  • 1/2″ or 3/4″ plywood or hardwood boards for the body
  • Drawer front (solid wood or plywood)
  • Drawer slides (side mount or under mount)
  • Screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (100 and 220 grit)
  • Wood finish (stain, oil, or polyurethane)
  • Wood filler (optional for filling gaps)
  • Drawer pull handle
  • Nails or screws for assembly

Tools Required:

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill with bits (for screws and drawer slides)
  • Measuring tape
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Clamps
  • Sanding block or electric sander
  • Woodworking clamps

Steps to Build:

1. Cut the Wood Pieces

  • For the frame:

    • Two side panels: Cut two pieces to the height you want for the nightstand (usually around 24-30 inches high) and the depth (around 18-20 inches).
    • Top and bottom panels: Cut the top and bottom pieces to match the width of the side panels. The width will typically be around 20-24 inches depending on the size you want.
    • Back panel: Cut the back panel to fit the dimensions of the base (top and bottom width, height).
  • For the drawer:

    • Drawer front panel: The width should match the width of the nightstand opening, and the height will depend on your design (typically about 4-6 inches).
    • Drawer sides: Cut two pieces, matching the depth of the nightstand.
    • Drawer bottom panel: This piece should fit snugly inside the drawer frame, with a slight gap for clearance.

2. Assemble the Frame

  • Begin by attaching the side panels to the bottom panel using wood glue and screws. Make sure they are square at the corners using a carpenter’s square.
  • Attach the back panel in the same manner. Ensure everything is flush and even.
  • Attach the top panel last, leaving a small overhang along the edges for a neat look.

3. Build the Drawer Box

  • Construct the drawer by gluing and screwing the front, sides, and back pieces together, ensuring it is square.
  • Fit the drawer bottom into the sides, securing it with wood glue and nails or screws.
  • Attach drawer slides to both the sides of the drawer and inside the nightstand, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Install the Drawer

  • Slide the drawer into the frame and adjust the position so it opens and closes smoothly. If the slides need adjustment, you can move them slightly before securing them firmly.

5. Construct the Open Shelf

  • If you want to add a shelf below the drawer, cut a piece of wood to fit the width and depth of the open space.
  • Attach it to the inside of the frame, either using screws or brackets, ensuring it’s sturdy.

6. Finishing Touches

  • Sand the entire nightstand to smooth out edges and surfaces. Start with 100-grit sandpaper and finish with 220-grit for a finer smoothness.
  • Apply your choice of wood finish. A coat of polyurethane or a wood stain can enhance the wood’s natural beauty and durability.
  • Install a drawer pull handle on the front of the drawer, drilling small holes for screws.

7. Final Assembly

  • Once the finish is dry, give everything a final inspection and do any touch-ups needed.
  • Place the nightstand in its intended location and load it up with your items!

Optional Design Modifications:

  • Legs: Add some simple wooden or metal legs for a more modern look.
  • Drawer Divider: Inside the drawer, add a small divider to keep things organized.
  • Decorative trim: Add some trim around the edges for a more finished look.

Once you’ve finished, you’ll have a sturdy, custom-built nightstand with a drawer and open shelf that you can be proud of!
