How to Make a Wooden Mobile Stand for Video Recording

Creating a wooden mobile stand for video recording is a great DIY project that enhances stability and ensures smooth video capture. A well-designed stand can help you record hands-free videos, whether for vlogging, tutorials, or video calls. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of making a sturdy and functional wooden mobile stand.

Materials and Tools Required

Before starting, gather the following materials and tools:

Materials:

  • A wooden plank (preferably plywood or hardwood) – around 10×6 inches
  • A small wooden block (for support) – around 3×2 inches
  • Wood glue or screws
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)

Tools:

  • Saw (hand saw or jigsaw)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Clamps
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Chisel (if needed)
  • File or rasp
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Measure and Mark the Wood

Start by marking the dimensions on the wooden plank. The base should be at least 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep to provide stability. For the back support, use a 10-inch long wooden piece to hold your mobile phone at an optimal viewing angle.

Step 2: Cut the Wooden Pieces

Using a saw, carefully cut along the marked lines. You should have the following pieces:

  1. Base Plate: 6 inches x 4 inches
  2. Back Support: 10 inches x 4 inches
  3. Phone Holder Groove: A small piece attached to the base where the phone will rest

Ensure that the edges are smooth using sandpaper or a file.

Step 3: Create the Phone Slot

  • Using a chisel or a small saw, cut a groove in the phone holder piece where your mobile will sit.
  • The slot should be at least 0.5 inches deep and 3 inches wide to accommodate most smartphones.
  • Sand the edges to prevent scratches on your device.

Step 4: Assemble the Stand

  • Attach the back support piece to the base at a slight angle (approximately 70-80 degrees) for a comfortable viewing angle.
  • Secure it using wood glue or screws. If using screws, pre-drill holes to prevent splitting.
  • Fix the phone holder at the front of the base so the mobile can rest securely.

Clamp the pieces together and let the glue dry completely.

Step 5: Sanding and Finishing

  • Use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out rough edges, followed by 220-grit sandpaper for a fine finish.
  • Apply a wood stain, varnish, or paint for a polished look and durability.
  • Let it dry completely before use.

Step 6: Test the Stand

  • Place your phone in the slot and check the stability.
  • Adjust the angle if needed by trimming the back support.
  • If recording video, ensure the phone is positioned securely and at a comfortable height.

Optional Upgrades:

  • Adjustable Tilt: Add hinges to the back support to change the angle.
  • Tripod Mount: Drill a hole in the base to attach a tripod screw for extra stability.
  • Cable Slot: Cut a small hole for charging cable access while recording.

By following these steps, you can easily create a durable and functional wooden mobile stand perfect for video recording.
