How to Make a Wooden Magazine Rack with a Built-in Handle

A wooden magazine rack with a built-in handle is a great project for woodworking enthusiasts of all skill levels. This simple yet functional design keeps your magazines, newspapers, and books organized while offering easy portability. In this guide, you’ll learn how to build a sturdy and stylish wooden magazine rack with a comfortable handle.

Materials and Tools Needed

Before starting, gather the necessary materials and tools:

Materials
  • ¾” thick plywood or hardwood board (pine, oak, or birch)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws (1¼”)
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Clear polyurethane (for protection)
Tools
  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Jigsaw (for handle cutout)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Wood chisel (optional)
  • Paintbrush or cloth (for staining)

Step 1: Plan and Measure

Before cutting your wood, decide on the dimensions of your magazine rack. A good size for a functional rack is:

  • Sides: 12” x 14”
  • Bottom: 14” x 6”
  • Front and Back Panels: 14” x 10”

These dimensions can be adjusted based on your needs.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a circular saw or table saw, cut your wood pieces to the correct dimensions:

  1. Cut two side panels (12” x 14”).
  2. Cut the front and back panels (14” x 10”).
  3. Cut the bottom panel (14” x 6”).
  4. Mark and cut the handle: Draw a handle shape (a centered oval or rectangle about 1” x 5”) on the upper portion of each side panel. Use a drill to make a starting hole, then cut out the handle using a jigsaw.

Step 3: Smooth the Edges

  • Use sandpaper (120 grit) to smooth the edges of all pieces.
  • Pay extra attention to the handle area to ensure a comfortable grip.
  • If needed, round over the edges slightly with a wood chisel or router.

Step 4: Assemble the Rack

  1. Attach the bottom panel: Apply wood glue along the bottom edges of the side panels and secure the bottom piece between them.
  2. Attach the front and back panels: Apply wood glue to the edges of the front and back panels, then align them with the sides. Use clamps to hold the pieces together.
  3. Secure with screws: Drill pilot holes and drive wood screws through the side panels into the front, back, and bottom pieces for extra strength.
  4. Check for alignment: Ensure everything is square before the glue dries.

Step 5: Sand and Fill

  • Once the glue dries, sand the entire rack with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
  • Fill any screw holes or gaps with wood filler and sand again once dry.

Step 6: Apply Finish

  • For a natural look, apply wood stain with a brush or cloth, then let it dry before sealing with clear polyurethane.
  • For a painted finish, apply a primer first, followed by your preferred paint color.

Step 7: Let It Cure and Enjoy!

After the final coat dries, your magazine rack is ready for use! The built-in handle makes it easy to move around, whether you’re placing it next to your sofa, bed, or office.
