How to make a wooden jigsaw puzzle for family fun

Making a wooden jigsaw puzzle can be a fun and rewarding project for family activities! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a personalized wooden puzzle:

Materials:

  • Plywood or MDF board (thin, around 1/4″ thick works well)
  • Printed image (you can use a photo, artwork, or even a family photo)
  • Mod Podge or glue (for adhering the image to the wood)
  • Jigsaw (scroll saw is ideal for cutting the puzzle pieces, or you can use a hand jigsaw if you’re comfortable)
  • Sandpaper (fine grit)
  • Paint (optional) for finishing edges
  • Wax paper or parchment paper for sticking the image down

Instructions:

  1. Choose Your Image:

    • Select a fun or meaningful image for the puzzle. It could be a family photo, a favorite scene, or any artwork you like. Print it on standard paper or use photo paper, depending on the image’s size and your preference.
  2. Prepare the Wood:

    • Cut the plywood or MDF board to the size you want your puzzle to be. You can use a circular saw or jigsaw for this step. Make sure the wood is smooth and free of any rough edges before continuing.
  3. Adhere the Image:

    • Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge or another adhesive on the surface of the wood where the image will go. Stick the printed image onto the wood carefully, ensuring it’s well-positioned. Smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles with a scraper or a credit card.
    • Let it dry completely. Once dry, coat the top of the image with another layer of Mod Podge or glue to seal it.
  4. Mark Your Puzzle Pieces:

    • On the back of the wood, sketch out the pattern for your puzzle pieces. You can go with traditional jigsaw shapes or get creative with custom designs. Make sure the pieces are large enough for younger kids if they’ll be involved, or smaller for a more challenging puzzle.
    • If you’re not comfortable drawing by hand, you could print a puzzle template and trace it onto the back of the wood.
  5. Cut the Puzzle Pieces:

    • Use a jigsaw or scroll saw to carefully cut out the pieces following the pattern you’ve drawn. If you’re using a scroll saw, you can create tighter, more intricate cuts.
    • Go slowly and wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from sawdust. The cutting process can take a bit of patience, but the more precise you are, the better the pieces will fit together.
  6. Sand the Edges:

    • Once all pieces are cut, use sandpaper to smooth out the edges of each puzzle piece. This will help avoid any splinters and give the puzzle a polished, professional look.
  7. Finish (Optional):

    • If you like, you can paint the edges or add a finishing coat of varnish to protect the surface. This step isn’t necessary but can add a nice touch to the overall appearance.
  8. Test It Out:

    • Assemble the puzzle to make sure all the pieces fit together well and that the image looks good. You can now enjoy it with your family!

Tips:

  • For an easier project, you can buy pre-cut wooden puzzle blanks from craft stores, which will save you some time.
  • To add a twist, make a puzzle with a secret image that’s revealed when the pieces are put together!
