How to make a wooden jewelry tray

Making a wooden jewelry tray is a great woodworking project that combines practicality with creativity. Here’s a simple guide to help you craft your own wooden jewelry tray:

Materials Needed:

  1. Wood: Choose a type of wood like walnut, oak, or maple for a sturdy base. You’ll need about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch thick wood depending on the size you want.
  2. Wood Glue: For securing pieces together.
  3. Screws or Nails: If you’re adding partitions or if you want extra reinforcement.
  4. Sandpaper: For smoothing rough edges and surfaces.
  5. Wood Finish: A protective layer to enhance the wood’s color and prevent damage.
  6. Measuring Tape or Ruler: For precise measurements.
  7. Saw: A handsaw, jigsaw, or table saw depending on your available tools.
  8. Clamps: To hold the wood in place as the glue dries.
  9. Optional Additions: Felt for lining the tray or small dividers for compartments.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Plan the Design and Measure

Decide on the size of your jewelry tray. A good average size for a basic tray is 12×8 inches, but you can customize it based on your needs. Sketch out your design, including any dividers or compartments you want to include.

2. Cut the Wood Pieces

  • Cut a rectangular piece for the base of the tray.
  • Cut the sides to the desired height (typically 1 to 2 inches high). You can use simple rectangular pieces or bevel the edges for a more decorative look.
  • If you’re adding dividers to separate compartments for rings, earrings, or bracelets, measure and cut those as well.

3. Sand the Edges and Surfaces

Sand all the cut edges and surfaces of the wood pieces with medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots. Follow up with fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.

4. Assemble the Tray

  • Start by gluing the side pieces to the base of the tray. Apply wood glue along the edges where the sides meet the base, then press the pieces together.
  • Use clamps to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries (usually around 30 minutes to 1 hour). Wipe away any excess glue before it dries.
  • If you want extra durability, you can reinforce the tray with small screws or nails through the sides.

5. Create Dividers (Optional)

If you’re adding dividers to the tray, glue them in place once the tray frame has dried. You can also use small nails to secure them for added strength.

6. Finishing Touches

  • Once the tray is assembled, sand all the surfaces again to ensure it’s smooth and comfortable to handle.
  • Apply your choice of wood finish to protect the wood. You can use a clear polyurethane finish or a natural oil finish to highlight the wood’s grain.
  • Allow the finish to dry thoroughly (usually 24 hours) before using the tray.

7. Add a Liner (Optional)

If you want to protect your jewelry or add a more luxurious feel to your tray, line it with felt or velvet. Cut the fabric to fit the tray and glue it in place.

Additional Tips:

  • Customization: You can get creative with the design by adding decorative carvings or inlays to the wood.
  • Different Sizes: Adjust the size of the tray depending on the number of compartments you want or how much jewelry you have.
  • Material Choice: Different woods can provide different aesthetics; softer woods like pine are easier to work with, while hardwoods like cherry or walnut provide a more polished and elegant look.
