How to make a wooden file holder for desk organization

Making a wooden file holder for desk organization is a great DIY project! Here’s a simple guide to help you create one:

Materials:

  • 1 piece of wood (1/4″ to 1/2″ thick, depending on preference)
    • You can use plywood, pine, or any wood you like.
  • Wood glue
  • Nails or screws
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Wood finish (optional)
  • Saw (circular or hand saw)
  • Measuring tape/ruler
  • Pencil
  • Clamps (optional)
  • Drill (optional, for screws)

Steps:

1. Decide on the Design

  • Size: First, decide on the size based on the number of files you want to hold. A common dimension is about 12″ x 8″ x 4″, but you can adjust it to your needs.
  • Open or Divided: You can either make it a single open holder or add dividers to separate files.

2. Cut the Pieces

  • Base: Cut a piece of wood to your desired length and width for the bottom (typically 12″ x 8″).
  • Sides: Cut two pieces for the side panels. These can be the same height (about 4″ is typical) and the same length as the bottom or slightly longer for a slanted effect.
  • Back Panel: Cut a piece for the back (this can be the same height as the sides and a little wider than the base).
  • Optional Dividers: If you want dividers, cut several thinner pieces (roughly 3–4″ tall and equal width to the base) depending on how many sections you want.

3. Assemble the Base

  • Lay the base piece flat, and then apply wood glue along the edges of the side panels.
  • Position the side panels on either side of the base, press them down, and clamp or hold until the glue sets (check the glue instructions for drying time).
  • For extra stability, you can reinforce with small nails or screws.

4. Attach the Back Panel

  • Apply wood glue to the edges of the back panel, and attach it to the back of the side pieces and base. Secure with screws or nails as well.

5. Add Dividers (Optional)

  • If you’re adding dividers, position them in the desired locations (typically 2-4 sections) on the base.
  • Apply wood glue and secure them. Reinforce with small nails or screws if necessary.

6. Finishing Touches

  • Once the glue has dried, sand the edges and surfaces to remove any roughness or sharp corners.
  • If you like, apply a wood finish or stain for a polished look. This also helps protect the wood.

7. Final Assembly

  • Once everything is dry and smooth, you can place your files in the holder, and voilà—you’ve got a custom wooden desk organizer!

If you want to get more creative, you can even add a handle or personalize it with paint or a woodburning design.
