How to make a wooden display case with LED lighting

To make a wooden display case with LED lighting, follow these steps:

Materials Needed:

  • Wood (plywood or hardwood for the frame and shelves)
  • LED strip lights
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • Hinges (if you want a door)
  • Glass (for the front or sides, optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • Drill with bits
  • Saw (circular saw or jigsaw)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Wire for LED lighting
  • Power adapter for LEDs

Steps:

  1. Design and Plan the Case

    • Sketch the design of your display case. Determine the size, number of shelves, and the positioning of the LED lights. If you plan to have glass panels, decide whether you want them on the front, sides, or top.
  2. Cut the Wood Pieces

    • Cut your wood pieces according to the design. You’ll need pieces for the bottom, top, back, and sides of the case. Also, cut pieces for any shelves.
    • For a typical rectangular case: two sides, a top, a bottom, a back panel, and shelves.
    • Ensure you measure the size of your LED strips and plan for their placement within the case.
  3. Sand the Edges

    • Sand all cut edges to smooth them out and avoid rough spots that could cause splinters.
  4. Assemble the Frame

    • Start assembling the frame of the display case. Attach the sides to the bottom piece using wood glue and screws for extra strength.
    • Then, attach the top and back panels. If you want a door, add hinges to one of the side panels and attach a door panel accordingly.
  5. Install the Shelves

    • Mark the positions for the shelves inside the case. You can either use wood brackets or create notches in the side panels to hold the shelves in place.
    • Secure the shelves using wood screws or wood dowels.
  6. Prepare for LED Lights

    • Plan where you want to install the LED strip lights. Common placements are along the top or underneath the shelves. Measure the length of the strips and cut them to size (if needed).
    • Install the LED strips along the planned area, peeling off the adhesive backing on the LEDs and sticking them in place.
    • If your LED strips need to be powered, drill a small hole in the back panel to pass the wires through.
  7. Wire the LED Lights

    • Connect the LED strips to the power adapter. If needed, use a dimmer switch to adjust the brightness of the lights.
    • Use cable clips to secure the wiring neatly along the back or inside the case.
    • If you’re using a battery-powered LED setup, ensure there’s a compartment or place to store the batteries.
  8. Install the Glass (Optional)

    • If you’re adding glass panels, cut or order glass to fit the front, sides, or top.
    • Install the glass using silicone adhesive or a glass frame.
  9. Finish the Wood

    • Apply stain or paint to the wood if desired. Let it dry completely before proceeding.
    • Sand the surface again for a smooth, polished finish.
  10. Test the LED Lighting

    • Plug in the LED light system and test if everything works as expected. Make sure the lights are evenly distributed and the case is well-lit.
  11. Final Assembly

    • Once everything is in place, double-check the fit and finish of the case.
    • Place your items inside the display case, and you’re ready to enjoy your illuminated display!

This simple DIY project will give you a functional and stylish display case. The addition of LED lighting adds a dramatic effect, making your display pop.
