How to make a wooden desk with built-in shelves

Making a wooden desk with built-in shelves can be a great project if you’re looking for a custom, functional workspace. Here’s a basic guide to help you through the process:

Materials Needed:

  • Plywood (for the desk top and shelves)
  • Hardwood lumber (for the legs and frame)
  • Wood screws or wood dowels
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper or an electric sander
  • Wood finish or paint (optional)
  • Measuring tape and square
  • Saw (circular saw or table saw)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver or impact driver

Steps:

1. Design and Measurements

  • Dimensions: Decide on the size of the desk. A typical desk is around 48″ wide, 24″ deep, and 30″ tall. However, you can adjust the dimensions to fit your space.
  • Shelf Placement: Determine how many shelves you want and where to place them. Typically, one or two shelves under the desk work well for storage.

2. Cutting the Pieces

  • Desk Top: Cut a piece of plywood for the desk surface. For a standard desk, it’s usually 48″ x 24″.
  • Shelves: Cut plywood for the shelves. The width should match the depth of the desk (e.g., 24″). The length of the shelves can vary based on your design but should be shorter than the desk width if they are to sit under the desk.
  • Legs and Frame: Cut hardwood for the legs (usually 4 legs, each about 30” tall) and frame pieces that will hold the shelves in place.

3. Building the Frame

  • Desk Frame: Using your hardwood, construct a rectangular frame for the desk by attaching the frame pieces to the legs using wood screws or dowels. The frame should be slightly smaller than the desk surface to allow for the plywood to sit on top.
  • Shelf Supports: Attach smaller horizontal frame pieces under the desk surface, depending on how many shelves you want. The frame will support the shelves from below.

4. Assembling the Desk

  • Attach the Top: Secure the plywood desk top to the frame using wood screws or wood dowels. Make sure it’s centered and level.
  • Install the Shelves: Position the shelves where you want them and secure them with wood screws into the side of the frame or the shelf supports.

5. Finishing

  • Sanding: Sand the entire desk to smooth out any rough edges. Start with a coarse grit and finish with a finer grit for a smoother finish.
  • Staining or Painting: Apply a wood finish, stain, or paint to the desk for a polished look. If you prefer a natural wood look, go with a clear polyurethane finish to protect the wood while highlighting its grain.

6. Final Assembly

  • Once everything is dry and finished, check for stability. Tighten any loose screws and ensure the desk is level.
  • If you want, you can add additional details like drawer pulls, a keyboard tray, or cable management systems.

That’s it! You now have a functional, custom-built desk with shelves.
