How to Make a Wooden Chair with a Built-in Bookshelf
A wooden chair with a built-in bookshelf is a perfect combination of functionality and craftsmanship. It provides comfort for reading while conveniently storing books within arm’s reach. This project is great for woodworking enthusiasts of all levels and can be customized to fit different styles. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to build a wooden chair with a built-in bookshelf.
Materials Needed:
- Hardwood (oak, maple, or pine)
- Plywood (for bookshelf compartments)
- Wood glue
- Wood screws (1 ¼” and 2”)
- Sandpaper (80-grit and 220-grit)
- Wood stain or paint
- Clear wood finish (polyurethane or lacquer)
- Measuring tape
- Circular saw or table saw
- Jigsaw
- Drill and drill bits
- Clamps
- Pocket hole jig (optional)
- Wood filler
- Paintbrush or rag
Step 1: Plan and Design the Chair
Before cutting any wood, sketch the design and decide on the dimensions. A standard chair seat height is around 18 inches, with a backrest height of 36–40 inches. The bookshelf can be placed beneath the seat or integrated into the sides or backrest.
Key Design Features to Consider:
- Under-seat storage: A lift-up seat reveals a storage box for books.
- Side shelves: Bookshelves on both sides of the chair.
- Backrest storage: A shelf incorporated into the backrest for easy access.
Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces
Using a circular saw or table saw, cut the wood according to your chosen design. Below are the basic parts you’ll need:
- Chair Legs: Four pieces (2 front legs at 18”, 2 back legs at 36–40”)
- Seat Frame: Four pieces (Front and back rails 18” wide, side rails 20” long)
- Seat Base: A solid wood or plywood piece (18” x 20”)
- Backrest: A solid wood panel or slats (18” wide x 20” tall)
- Bookshelf Panels: Cut shelves based on your design.
Step 3: Assemble the Chair Frame
- Attach the front and back rails to the legs using wood screws and glue. Reinforce with pocket holes for extra strength.
- Secure the side rails to complete the rectangular frame.
- Attach the seat base on top of the frame with screws.
Step 4: Build the Bookshelf
- If using under-seat storage, hinge the seat base for a lift-up design.
- For side storage, install vertical panels to support shelves.
- If incorporating a backrest bookshelf, attach horizontal shelves between the chair’s back legs.
Step 5: Secure All Parts
- Use clamps to hold pieces together while drilling pilot holes and inserting screws.
- Reinforce all joints with wood glue.
- Sand the entire structure to remove rough edges.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
- Fill screw holes and gaps with wood filler.
- Sand the entire chair with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
- Apply stain or paint based on your preference.
- Finish with a protective coat of polyurethane or lacquer.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Chair
Once the finish dries, place your favorite books in the built-in bookshelf and enjoy your custom-built reading chair!
