How to make a wooden cat tree with a cozy hideout

Building a wooden cat tree with a cozy hideout is a fun and practical project. It provides your cat with a place to climb, scratch, and rest, all while fitting seamlessly into your home. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build one:

Materials Needed:

  • Plywood or MDF (for the base, platforms, and hideout)
  • 2×4 wooden boards (for the frame)
  • Cat carpet or sisal rope (for covering scratching areas)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Power drill with screwdriver bits
  • Saw (circular saw or jigsaw)
  • Upholstery fabric (optional, for extra coziness)
  • Staple gun (if using upholstery fabric)
  • Carpet or faux fur (optional, for lining the hideout)

Tools Needed:

  • Saw (jigsaw or circular saw)
  • Power drill
  • Screwdriver bits
  • Sandpaper
  • Staple gun (if covering with fabric)

Instructions:

Step 1: Design Your Cat Tree

Before cutting any wood, sketch a rough design of the cat tree. Think about the size of your cat and the space where the tree will go. The design should include:

  • A base for stability
  • Multiple levels for climbing
  • A cozy hideout at the bottom or middle section
  • Scratch posts or areas

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using your saw, cut the following pieces:

  • Base: A sturdy rectangle or square for stability. A 2′ x 2′ or 3′ x 3′ base works well.
  • Frame Posts: Four vertical posts from the 2×4 wood, cut to your desired height (around 3-5 feet depending on how tall you want the tree).
  • Platforms: Several flat pieces of plywood or MDF for the resting areas. Ensure they are large enough for your cat to lounge comfortably (around 10” to 16” wide).
  • Hideout: A box-like structure that fits inside the tree. This can be a simple square or a more open design with a small entrance.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Attach the Posts: Start by attaching the four vertical posts to the base using wood screws and wood glue. Space them evenly to ensure the tree is stable.
  2. Add Horizontal Support: Install crossbars or smaller horizontal beams between the posts, so you can attach the platforms. Screw them into place, ensuring they are sturdy enough to hold the weight of your cat.

Step 4: Build the Hideout

  1. Construct the Box: Cut plywood or MDF to form the walls of the hideout. You’ll need four sides and a base. Assemble them into a box using wood glue and screws.
  2. Attach the Hideout: Place the hideout box onto the tree. You can attach it to the bottom or a middle level, depending on your design. Ensure the box is secured well and stable enough for your cat to use it safely.

Step 5: Install Platforms

  1. Secure Platforms: Place the cut plywood platforms on top of the horizontal supports you installed earlier. Screw them in place or secure them using brackets to ensure they don’t shift.
  2. Consider the Placement: Arrange the platforms at different heights to create a climbing route for your cat. You can stagger them for a more natural design.

Step 6: Cover the Tree

  1. Scratch Areas: Wrap sisal rope around the vertical posts to create scratching surfaces. Secure it with wood glue and staples.
  2. Platform and Hideout Lining: You can cover the platforms and the hideout with cat carpet, faux fur, or soft fabric. This makes the areas more comfortable and attractive to your cat.
  3. Staple or Glue Fabric: For upholstery fabric or faux fur, staple it tightly around the edges, or use glue to secure it. Ensure there are no loose pieces where your cat could get stuck.

Step 7: Sand and Finish

Sand all edges and surfaces to remove any sharp or rough spots. If you want to finish the wood, you can use a non-toxic wood stain or paint, but make sure it’s safe for pets.

Step 8: Final Assembly

  1. Test Stability: Before letting your cat explore the tree, give it a gentle shake to ensure everything is tightly secured and won’t tip over.
  2. Add Toys: Consider attaching small dangling toys or a rope to encourage your cat to interact with the tree.

Tips:

  • Cat-Friendly Materials: Make sure all paints, stains, and adhesives are non-toxic and safe for animals.
  • Size of Hideout: Ensure the hideout is large enough for your cat to curl up comfortably but small enough to feel cozy.
  • Extra Scratching Surfaces: You can add more sisal rope or cardboard to create additional scratching spots.
  • Placement: Put the tree near a window or in a quiet corner where your cat will feel safe.

This project can be customized to suit your cat’s needs and your space. Once it’s complete, your cat will have a perfect place to climb, scratch, and hide!
