How to make a wooden cabinet for the garage

Building a wooden cabinet for your garage is a great project to help you organize and store tools, equipment, or other items. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make one.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • Plywood sheets (for the cabinet sides, back, shelves, and doors)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws (1.5” screws)
  • Wood filler
  • Hinges (for the cabinet doors)
  • Cabinet handle (optional)
  • Wood finish or paint (to protect the wood)
  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Power drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood clamps
  • Square tool (for right angles)
  • Sandpaper or an electric sander

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Plan and Design

Start by planning the dimensions of your cabinet. Measure the space in your garage where you want the cabinet to go. A standard garage cabinet is typically about 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide, and 2 feet deep, but you can adjust the size based on your needs.

Draw out the design of the cabinet. Include the number of shelves you want, the size of the doors, and how the cabinet will be organized. You can customize the internal divisions to accommodate your tools or equipment.

Step 2: Cut the Pieces

Using your design plan, cut the following pieces from plywood:

  • 2 side panels (the height of your cabinet and depth of the cabinet)
  • 1 top panel and 1 bottom panel (same length as the sides)
  • 1 back panel (same width as the sides and top/bottom panels)
  • Shelves (based on your design; these will be cut to fit within the cabinet space)
  • 2 door panels (if you plan on adding doors)

Use a circular saw or table saw to cut the plywood into these pieces. Ensure that your cuts are straight and accurate.

Step 3: Assemble the Cabinet Frame

Start by assembling the frame of the cabinet. Lay the top and bottom panels flat and attach the side panels using wood glue and screws. Make sure everything is aligned and squared. Use a square tool to check that the corners are right angles.

Secure the back panel by attaching it to the frame using screws. If you want additional stability, you can add small corner brackets at the back.

Step 4: Install the Shelves

Decide where you want the shelves inside the cabinet. You can use shelf supports or simply screw the shelves into place. If you want adjustable shelves, drill holes along the inside of the cabinet sides to place the shelf brackets.

Install the shelves by either resting them on the supports or attaching them with screws.

Step 5: Prepare and Attach the Doors

If you’re adding doors to your cabinet, measure the opening where the doors will go. Cut the door panels to size, making sure they are slightly smaller than the cabinet opening so they can swing freely.

Attach the hinges to the sides of the cabinet and then to the doors. Make sure the doors are aligned properly and open and close smoothly.

Step 6: Sand and Finish

Once the cabinet is assembled, sand the entire cabinet to smooth any rough edges or surfaces. If you’re using wood filler, fill any screw holes and sand those areas as well.

Apply a finish or paint to protect the wood, especially if the cabinet will be exposed to moisture in the garage. Use a wood finish or varnish for a more natural look or paint the cabinet for a different aesthetic.

Step 7: Mount the Cabinet (Optional)

If you’d like to secure the cabinet to the wall for extra safety, use wall anchors or screws to mount the cabinet. This is especially important if you have a tall cabinet or plan to store heavy items inside.

Step 8: Add Handles or Knobs

For added functionality, attach handles or knobs to the cabinet doors for easy opening and closing.

Conclusion

With your cabinet built and finished, you’ll have a great piece of furniture to help organize your garage space. You can customize the internal compartments to hold various tools, cleaning supplies, or other garage items.
