Creating a wooden blanket chest involves several steps, from selecting the right materials to finishing the final product. Here’s a guide on how to make one:
Materials Needed:
- Lumber (typically oak, pine, or cedar)
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Hinges (for the lid)
- Handles (optional)
- Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
- Wood stain or paint (optional)
- Clear wood finish or polyurethane
- A saw (table saw, miter saw, or circular saw)
- Drill with bits
- Clamps
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Square
- Safety goggles and hearing protection
Step 1: Plan and Measure
Start by planning the size of your chest. A common size for a blanket chest is about 18 to 20 inches in height, 40 inches in length, and 18 inches in depth. Customize the dimensions based on your needs.
- Top Panel (Lid): One large piece that covers the entire opening.
- Side Panels: Two long pieces for the length of the chest.
- End Panels: Two shorter pieces for the depth of the chest.
- Bottom Panel: One piece to fit the bottom.
- Dividers (optional): If you want to add internal compartments, plan for dividers.
- Front Panel: You can add a decorative front panel, such as raised panels or simple slats.
Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces
Using your saw, cut the wood into the desired dimensions. You’ll need pieces for the sides, top, bottom, and front panels, as well as any internal dividers or decorative features.
- Cut the side panels to your chest’s desired length.
- Cut the end panels to the desired depth.
- Cut the lid panel, ensuring it overhangs slightly on the sides for a neat appearance.
- Cut the bottom panel to fit snugly within the chest.
Step 3: Assemble the Box
- Attach the side and end panels: Use wood glue along the edges of the panels and clamp them in place. Drill pilot holes for screws and screw them in to secure the sides and end pieces together.
- Attach the bottom panel: Once the side and end panels are secured, glue and screw the bottom piece in place, making sure it is centered.
Step 4: Install the Lid
- Attach Hinges: Position the hinges on the back of the chest and screw them into place. Ensure that the lid opens and closes smoothly.
- Check the Fit: Before securing the hinges completely, double-check that the lid fits well and opens without issues. Adjust if necessary.
Step 5: Sand the Chest
- Start sanding the entire chest using medium-grit sandpaper (around 120-grit). Sand all surfaces to smooth out rough edges and surfaces.
- Follow up with finer grit sandpaper (220-grit) for a smooth finish.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
- Stain or Paint: If you want to stain or paint your chest, apply the stain or paint of your choice. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
- Protective Finish: After staining or painting, apply a clear wood finish or polyurethane to protect the wood. This will add a nice sheen and protect the surface from damage.
Step 7: Add Handles (Optional)
For ease of lifting, you can add handles to the sides of the chest. Drill holes for the handles and secure them with screws.
Step 8: Final Assembly
- Once everything is dry and fully assembled, give the chest a final inspection. Make sure the lid opens and closes properly, the screws are secure, and the finish is even.
Now you have your own custom wooden blanket chest, perfect for storage and as a piece of furniture in your home!
