How to Make a Wooden Bench Swing for a Porch

A wooden bench swing is a beautiful and functional addition to any porch, offering a relaxing spot to enjoy fresh air while adding a touch of rustic charm. With the right tools and materials, you can build a sturdy and stylish wooden bench swing that will last for years. Follow this step-by-step guide to construct your own wooden porch swing.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • 2×4 or 2×6 pressure-treated lumber (for frame and seat)
  • 1×6 boards (for seat slats and backrest)
  • Heavy-duty eye bolts with nuts and washers
  • Outdoor-rated chain (or rope)
  • Porch swing hangers or heavy-duty hooks
  • Exterior wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)
  • Wood stain or exterior paint
  • Polyurethane sealant (optional)

Tools:

  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular saw or miter saw)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Clamps
  • Sander or sandpaper
  • Level

Step 1: Plan and Measure Your Swing

Before starting, determine the size of your bench swing. A standard porch swing is about 4 feet wide, but you can adjust the dimensions based on your available space. Make sure your porch ceiling or overhead beam can support the weight of the swing and those who will sit on it.

Suggested Dimensions:

  • Width: 48 inches
  • Depth: 18-24 inches
  • Height of backrest: 18 inches
  • Armrest height: 8 inches from the seat

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a saw, cut the following pieces:

  • Seat frame: Two long boards (front and back) and two shorter side boards
  • Seat slats: Several 1×6 boards (spaced evenly)
  • Backrest: A long board for the back support and several vertical slats
  • Armrests: Two 2×4 pieces for support

Sand all edges to smooth rough areas and prevent splinters.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Create the seat frame by attaching the front and back pieces to the side supports using wood screws and wood glue.
  2. Add seat slats by spacing them evenly across the frame and securing them with screws.
  3. Attach the backrest by connecting the back support to the frame and attaching the vertical slats for support.
  4. Install armrests by screwing them into the frame and securing them to the backrest.

Use a level to ensure the seat is even before tightening all screws.

Step 4: Drill Holes for Hanging Hardware

  • Measure about 2-3 inches from each side of the swing and drill holes for the eye bolts.
  • Insert heavy-duty eye bolts through the holes and secure them with washers and nuts.

Step 5: Sand and Finish the Swing

  • Sand the entire swing with 120- and 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
  • Apply wood stain or exterior paint for weather protection.
  • Use a polyurethane sealant to add durability.
  • Let the swing dry completely before installing it.

Step 6: Install the Hanging Hardware

  1. Locate strong support beams on your porch ceiling.
  2. Attach swing hangers or heavy-duty hooks securely to the beams.
  3. Connect the chains (or ropes) to the swing using the installed eye bolts.
  4. Adjust the swing height so that it is about 17-20 inches from the ground for comfortable seating.

Step 7: Test and Enjoy Your Swing

  • Gently sit on the swing to test its stability.
  • Make any necessary adjustments to the chains or support.
  • Add cushions or pillows for extra comfort.

Now, sit back and enjoy your handcrafted wooden bench swing!
