How to Make a DIY Flower-Pressed Tea Tray

Creating a DIY flower-pressed tea tray is a beautiful and functional way to preserve flowers while adding a personal touch to your home décor. This project is simple yet rewarding, requiring just a few materials and a little creativity. Follow these steps to craft your own unique flower-pressed tea tray.

Materials Needed:

  • A wooden or acrylic tea tray

  • Pressed flowers (dried and flattened)

  • Clear epoxy resin or Mod Podge (depending on the finish you prefer)

  • A paintbrush

  • Sandpaper (if using a wooden tray)

  • Acrylic paint or wood stain (optional)

  • A mixing cup and stirring stick (for resin)

  • Gloves and a mask (for resin safety)

  • Plastic sheet or wax paper (to protect the workspace)

Step 1: Pressing the Flowers

If you don’t already have pressed flowers, you can make your own by placing fresh flowers between parchment paper and pressing them inside a heavy book for about one to two weeks. Alternatively, you can use a flower press for faster results. Delicate flowers like daisies, pansies, and ferns work well for this project.

Step 2: Preparing the Tray

If using a wooden tray, lightly sand the surface to create a smooth base for your design. Wipe away any dust with a dry cloth. You can leave the wood natural or apply a wood stain or acrylic paint to match your home décor. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely before moving on.

Step 3: Arranging the Flowers

Lay out your pressed flowers on the tray to create a design you love. Experiment with different placements before securing them. Once satisfied, carefully attach the flowers using a thin layer of Mod Podge or clear-drying glue. Let this dry for a few hours.

Step 4: Sealing with Resin or Mod Podge

  • Using Resin: If opting for a resin finish, mix the epoxy resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Pour the resin evenly over the flowers, ensuring full coverage. Use a toothpick to remove any bubbles that form. Let the resin cure in a dust-free area for at least 24 hours.

  • Using Mod Podge: Apply multiple layers of Mod Podge over the flowers, letting each layer dry before applying the next. This method creates a glossy, sealed finish without the need for resin.

Step 5: Final Touches

Once the resin or Mod Podge has fully dried, check for any uneven areas. Lightly sand and buff the surface if needed. Wipe clean, and your flower-pressed tea tray is ready to use!

This DIY project makes for a great gift or a lovely addition to your home. Enjoy serving tea with a personalized, nature-inspired touch!
