How to Make a DIY Flower-Pressed Lampshade

Creating a DIY flower-pressed lampshade is a fun and creative way to add a touch of nature and elegance to your home décor. By preserving real flowers and incorporating them into a lampshade, you can create a unique and personalized lighting fixture. Follow these simple steps to make your own flower-pressed lampshade.

Materials Needed

  • A plain fabric or paper lampshade

  • Pressed flowers (variety of colors and sizes)

  • Mod Podge or clear-drying craft glue

  • Foam brush or paintbrush

  • Tweezers (optional)

  • Wax paper or parchment paper

  • Heavy books for pressing flowers

  • Scissors

  • Clear acrylic spray (optional, for sealing)

Step 1: Gather and Press Flowers

Select fresh flowers with vibrant colors and thin petals, as they press better. Pansies, daisies, violets, and ferns work well. Lay the flowers between two sheets of wax paper and place them inside a heavy book. Add additional weight by stacking more books on top. Let the flowers press for about one to two weeks.

Step 2: Prepare the Lampshade

Clean the lampshade to remove dust or debris. If the shade is dark, consider painting it a light color to help the flowers stand out. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Plan the Flower Arrangement

Before applying glue, arrange the pressed flowers on the lampshade to see how they will look. Experiment with different patterns, such as a scattered effect, a floral wreath, or a cascading design.

Step 4: Adhere the Pressed Flowers

Using a foam brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge or clear-drying glue to the back of each pressed flower. Carefully place the flower onto the lampshade, smoothing it down gently with your fingers or tweezers to remove any air bubbles. Repeat the process until you have covered the desired area.

Step 5: Seal and Protect

Once all the flowers are attached, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface of the lampshade to seal the flowers. Be gentle to avoid damaging the delicate petals. Allow it to dry completely. If desired, spray a light coat of clear acrylic spray to provide additional protection.

Step 6: Assemble and Enjoy

After the lampshade is fully dry, attach it to a lamp base. Turn on the light and admire the beautiful glow created by the pressed flowers.

This DIY flower-pressed lampshade makes a perfect addition to any room, bringing in a natural, artistic touch. Experiment with different flowers and patterns to create a design that suits your personal style.
