How to Make a DIY Floral-Printed Apron

Creating a DIY floral-printed apron is a fun and creative sewing project that adds a personal touch to your kitchen or craft space. You can make an apron that is stylish, practical, and perfectly suited to your tastes with a few materials and some sewing skills. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create your very own floral-printed apron.

Materials Needed:

  1. Floral fabric (cotton or linen is a great choice)

  2. Scissors

  3. Measuring tape

  4. Pins

  5. Sewing machine (or hand sewing supplies if preferred)

  6. Thread (matching the fabric color)

  7. Apron pattern (or paper to create your own)

  8. Bias tape or fabric for the ties and edging

  9. Iron (for pressing fabric)

  10. Chalk or fabric marker (for marking fabric)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Pattern or Template

  • If you don’t have a pre-made apron pattern, you can easily make your own. Start by measuring your chest, waist, and the desired length of your apron. Draw a rectangular or slightly A-line shape that fits these dimensions on a piece of paper.

  • For a basic apron, the pattern should include a bib (top part that covers the chest) and a skirt (bottom part that covers the waist and legs). Add a few inches to the sides and bottom for seam allowances.

2. Cut Your Fabric

  • Once your pattern is ready, lay it out on your floral fabric, ensuring the pattern is aligned the way you want it (with the flowers facing up or in a specific direction).

  • Pin the pattern to the fabric and carefully cut around the edges. You will need two pieces for the main apron (front and back), as well as long strips for the ties.

  • For the bib part, cut out two pieces (front and back) that are the size you want, based on your measurements. For the skirt, cut a piece that is wide enough to wrap around your waist comfortably and long enough to reach just above your knees or wherever you prefer.

3. Sew the Bib and Skirt Together

  • With right sides of the fabric facing each other, sew the two bib pieces (front and back) along the side edges, leaving the top open. Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  • For the skirt, fold the top edge over about 1/4 inch and press it with an iron. Then fold it over again, about 1/2 inch, and sew along the folded edge to create a neat hem.

  • Next, sew the bib to the skirt at the top edge. Make sure to match the side seams of the bib with the side seams of the skirt.

4. Create the Ties

  • To make the apron ties, cut two long strips of fabric (about 2-3 inches wide and at least 40 inches long, depending on how long you want them to be).

  • Fold the strips in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along the edge, leaving both ends open. Turn the strips inside out using a safety pin or a turning tool, and press them with an iron.

  • Attach the ends of these strips to the sides of the apron at the waist (for the waist ties) and at the top corners of the bib (for the neck ties). Sew them securely in place.

5. Add the Bias Tape (Optional)

  • To add a neat finish to the edges of the apron, you can use bias tape to trim the edges of the skirt and bib. This step is optional, but it adds a professional look to the apron.

  • Simply unfold the bias tape, align it with the raw edge of the fabric, and sew it in place. Fold the tape over the edge and sew along the opposite side to encase the raw fabric edges.

6. Final Touches

  • Press all seams and edges to give your apron a clean, crisp finish. You can also add any decorative touches, like pockets or embellishments, if desired.

  • If you prefer, you can also add a little ruffle at the bottom of the skirt by gathering the fabric and sewing it onto the apron for extra flair.

Tips for Success:

  • Fabric Choice: Cotton is ideal for aprons because it’s easy to sew and durable. Floral prints can add a charming and vintage feel to your apron, but you can choose any pattern that suits your style.

  • Comfort: Make sure the ties are long enough for you to comfortably tie them around your neck and waist.

  • Pockets: Add a pocket to the apron for extra practicality. Simply cut a square or rectangular piece of fabric, hem the edges, and sew it onto the skirt portion of the apron.

Variations:

  • Adjustable Neck Strap: Instead of sewing a fixed neck strap, you can create an adjustable neck strap using a D-ring or buttonhole to make the apron more versatile.

  • Layered Apron: For a more fashionable look, you can add layers to your apron, such as a ruffled skirt or a pleated section.

By following these steps, you’ll have a beautiful, functional DIY floral-printed apron that showcases your unique style. Whether for cooking, crafting, or just looking cute while doing chores, your handmade apron will make a great addition to your wardrobe or a thoughtful gift for someone special.
