How to Create a Wooden Storage Ottoman with a Cushioned Top

A wooden storage ottoman is a functional and stylish piece of furniture that provides extra storage while serving as a comfortable seat or footrest. This guide will walk you through the steps to build your own wooden storage ottoman with a cushioned top.

Materials Needed

  • ¾-inch plywood (for the box)
  • 1×2 wood strips (for internal supports)
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Hinges (soft-close recommended)
  • Foam padding (2-3 inches thick)
  • Fabric (upholstery fabric works best)
  • Batting (optional for extra softness)
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular or table saw)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cut Your Wood Pieces

For a standard-sized ottoman (18” x 18” x 18”):

  • Sides: Cut four pieces of ¾-inch plywood, each 16.5” x 18”
  • Bottom: One piece of ¾-inch plywood, 16.5” x 16.5”
  • Top (lid): One piece of ¾-inch plywood, 18” x 18”

Adjust the dimensions based on your needs.

Step 2: Assemble the Box

  1. Attach the sides – Use wood glue and screws to join the side panels together at a 90-degree angle. Clamp them until the glue sets.
  2. Attach the bottom – Secure the bottom piece to the frame using wood glue and screws.
  3. Add corner supports – Cut and install 1×2 wood strips inside the box corners for added stability.
  4. Sand the edges – Smooth all surfaces to prepare for finishing.

Step 3: Attach the Hinged Lid

  1. Position the hinges along one side of the top panel and secure them with screws.
  2. Attach the other side of the hinges to the back of the ottoman frame.
  3. Ensure the lid opens and closes smoothly.

Step 4: Add Cushioning to the Top

  1. Cut the foam – Use the plywood lid as a template and cut foam padding to size.
  2. Layer with batting (optional) – Wrap batting around the foam for extra softness.
  3. Upholster the lid – Stretch fabric tightly over the foam and secure it underneath with a staple gun.
  4. Trim excess fabric – Cut off any extra material to keep a neat look.

Step 5: Finish the Wooden Frame

  1. Apply wood stain or paint in your preferred color.
  2. Allow it to dry completely before handling.
  3. Optionally, add felt pads to the bottom to prevent floor scratches.
