How to create a wooden storage bench with a lift-up lid

Creating a wooden storage bench with a lift-up lid can be a rewarding project, offering both functionality and style. It combines the utility of extra storage with the convenience of a comfortable seating space. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build a simple, yet sturdy, wooden storage bench with a lift-up lid.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need:

Materials:

  • 1×6 or 1×8 pine boards (or wood of your choice for the frame and lid)
  • Plywood (for the bottom and back panels)
  • Wood screws
  • Hinges (for the lift-up lid)
  • Safety latches (optional, for keeping the lid open)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper or electric sander
  • Wood finish or paint (optional for aesthetics)

Tools:

  • Saw (table saw or circular saw)
  • Drill and screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood clamps
  • Wood filler (for any screw holes)
  • Paintbrush (if finishing)
  • Level
  • Square tool (for precise angles)

Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Wood

Start by measuring the dimensions for your storage bench. A common size for a standard bench might be 48 inches wide, 18 inches high, and 16 inches deep, but you can adjust based on your space and needs.

  • For the seat (lid): Cut two pieces of your 1×6 or 1×8 wood to match the width and depth of the bench (e.g., 48″ x 16″).
  • For the sides: Cut two pieces of wood for the length (e.g., 18″ tall) and the depth (e.g., 16″ deep). These pieces form the sides of your box.
  • For the front and back panels: Cut two pieces to fit the width of the bench (e.g., 48″). The height should match the height of the sides (e.g., 18″).
  • For the bottom panel: Cut a piece of plywood to fit inside the frame (e.g., 48″ x 16″).

You can also choose to cut decorative slats or add trim if you want to give the bench a more refined look.

Step 2: Assemble the Frame

  1. Attach the sides to the front and back panels. Use wood glue and screws to secure the side pieces to the front and back panels. Make sure the corners are square using a square tool or level.

  2. Attach the bottom panel. Secure the plywood bottom panel inside the frame with wood screws or nails, leaving a small gap between the edge of the plywood and the frame to allow for wood expansion.

Step 3: Build and Attach the Lid

  1. Attach the hinges to one edge of the lid. It’s important to position the hinges slightly inward from the edge so that the lid can open smoothly without obstruction. Make sure they are aligned properly before securing with screws.

  2. Position the lid on top of the frame, ensuring it fits securely. The lid should overhang slightly on each side for an attractive finish.

  3. Install the remaining hinge on the back of the box. Use screws to attach the hinges, making sure they are evenly spaced for a balanced lift.

Step 4: Sand and Finish the Bench

Before assembling the storage bench completely, take some time to sand the surfaces smooth. This will give your bench a professional finish and help the paint or stain adhere better.

  1. Sand the wood with medium-grit sandpaper (around 120-grit) and finish with finer-grit paper (around 220-grit).

  2. If you want to stain or paint your storage bench, now is the time to do it. Apply a wood stain or paint of your choice to achieve the desired look. Let it dry completely before proceeding.

Step 5: Attach the Lid Support

To ensure the lid stays open when lifted, you can install a lid support mechanism or safety latch. These are available at most hardware stores and can be attached to the inside of the lid and the box to hold the lid in place at a specific angle.

  1. Install the lid support on both sides of the lid for maximum stability.
  2. Check the lid’s function to make sure it opens and closes smoothly without catching.

Step 6: Final Assembly

Once the lid is attached and all finish work is done, you can assemble the bench completely. Attach any final pieces, such as decorative trim, handles, or footpads, and make sure everything is securely fastened.

Step 7: Enjoy Your New Storage Bench

Once everything is dry and assembled, you can start using your storage bench! It’s perfect for stashing shoes, blankets, toys, or any other household items. The lift-up lid makes it easy to access whatever you need, and the bench itself can double as extra seating in your living room, hallway, or entryway.

By following these steps, you’ll create a durable and attractive storage bench that adds both practicality and style to your space. Whether you opt for a natural wood finish or a painted design, your new piece of furniture will complement any room.
