Creating a wooden planter with a trellis support is a great DIY project that not only adds beauty to your garden or patio but also provides support for climbing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, or flowering vines. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make one:
Materials and Tools Needed:
- Wooden planks (cedar, pine, or any weather-resistant wood)
- Trellis material (bamboo stakes, wood, or wire mesh)
- Screws
- Wooden corner brackets
- Drill and drill bits
- Saw (circular saw or handsaw)
- Measuring tape
- Wood glue
- Wooden stakes (for trellis support)
- Sandpaper
- Outdoor paint or wood sealant (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood
Start by measuring and cutting your wood into the following pieces:
- For the planter box:
- 2 pieces for the length (depending on the size of your desired planter)
- 2 pieces for the width (again, depending on your size preferences)
- 1-2 pieces for the bottom (cut to fit the base of your box)
- For the trellis:
- Several long wooden stakes (or dowels), depending on how tall and wide you want your trellis.
- Cross braces or horizontal slats to attach to the vertical stakes.
Step 2: Assemble the Planter Box
- Side panels: Lay the four side panels of your box flat. Use wood glue to join the edges of the pieces together and secure them with screws. The longer pieces should be the sides, and the shorter pieces should be the front and back.
- Bottom panel: Attach the bottom pieces to the sides using screws or nails. You can also glue the edges for extra stability. Make sure the bottom is firmly attached to prevent soil from falling out.
If you’d like to add drainage holes to the bottom of your planter box, now’s the time to drill several small holes in the base.
Step 3: Build the Trellis Frame
- Assembling the frame: To create a trellis frame, take your wooden stakes (or bamboo poles) and position them vertically at your desired height. For a sturdy structure, space them about 4–6 inches apart.
- Attaching horizontal slats: Cut additional horizontal slats that will run across the vertical stakes. Attach them with screws or nails at equal intervals (6–8 inches apart) to create a grid-like pattern for plants to climb on.
Step 4: Attach the Trellis to the Planter
Once the trellis is assembled, attach it to the back of the planter box. You can do this by drilling screws through the top of the planter box into the bottom of the trellis frame. If you want extra stability, use corner brackets to secure the trellis to the sides of the planter.
Step 5: Sand the Wood
Smooth out the edges and surfaces of your planter box using sandpaper to prevent any splinters. This will also help the paint or wood sealant adhere better if you’re using one.
Step 6: Paint or Seal the Wood (Optional)
If you want to give your planter box and trellis a finished look and protect it from the elements, apply an outdoor wood finish, paint, or sealant. This will help preserve the wood and prevent weathering. Make sure the paint is suitable for outdoor use.
Step 7: Place the Planter and Trellis in Position
Once the paint is dry (if you applied any), position your planter where you want it in your garden or on your patio. Ensure the planter is level to allow for proper drainage.
Step 8: Add Soil and Plants
Now that your wooden planter with trellis support is ready, fill it with a good quality potting mix. Plant your climbing plants, vines, or flowers, and gently attach them to the trellis. As the plants grow, use plant ties or twine to help guide them along the trellis.
By following these steps, you’ll have a functional and attractive wooden planter with a trellis support perfect for your climbing plants. Not only does this provide extra beauty and functionality to your garden, but it also creates a great focal point for your outdoor space.
