How to Create a Wooden Music Stand with Adjustable Height
Creating a wooden music stand with adjustable height is a rewarding woodworking project that blends functionality with craftsmanship. Whether you’re a musician or a woodworker looking for a practical project, this guide will take you through the step-by-step process of making a sturdy and elegant music stand.
Materials and Tools Needed
Materials:
- Hardwood (oak, maple, or walnut) – for durability
- Plywood (¼” thick) – for the music tray
- Wood dowels (¾” diameter) – for support
- Metal rod or threaded rod (for height adjustment)
- Wood glue
- Screws and bolts
- Wingnuts (for tightening the adjustable mechanism)
- Sandpaper (120, 220 grit)
- Wood stain or finish
Tools:
- Table saw or circular saw
- Jigsaw (for shaping the music tray)
- Drill and drill bits
- Clamps
- Chisels
- Screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Router (optional, for decorative edges)
Step 1: Designing the Music Stand
Before you start cutting, sketch out your music stand design. It consists of three main parts:
- The Base – A sturdy tripod or flat base to keep the stand stable.
- The Support Pole – An adjustable vertical post that allows height changes.
- The Music Tray – A slanted surface with a lip to hold sheet music.
Standard dimensions:
- Music Tray: 18” wide × 12” tall
- Stand Height: Adjustable from 30” to 50”
Step 2: Cutting the Wood Pieces
Cut the Music Tray
- Use ¼” thick plywood for the back panel.
- Cut a hardwood frame around the plywood for a strong, professional look.
- Attach a 1-inch lip at the bottom of the tray to prevent sheet music from sliding off.
- Smooth all edges with sandpaper or a router.
Cut the Adjustable Support Pole
- Cut a ¾” thick hardwood dowel or a square post for the main support.
- Drill a hole through the upper part to attach the tray.
- For adjustability, use a second dowel inside a slightly wider tube (or create a notched sliding mechanism).
Cut the Base
- If using a tripod design, cut three equal-length hardwood legs (about 18” each).
- Attach them securely to the bottom of the support pole using screws and wood glue.
- If using a flat base, cut a heavy wooden block (around 12” square) and drill a hole to fit the pole.
Step 3: Assembling the Adjustable Mechanism
Option 1: Sliding Dowel System
- Insert a ¾” diameter dowel into a 1” diameter hole in the main support pole.
- Drill evenly spaced holes in the main post and use a removable pin to lock the height.
Option 2: Threaded Rod with Wingnut
- Drill a vertical hole through both the outer and inner pole.
- Insert a threaded rod with a wingnut, allowing you to tighten it at different heights.
Step 4: Attaching the Music Tray
- Drill a hole in the center back of the tray to attach it to the support pole.
- Use a pivot screw or hinge to allow the tray to tilt.
- Tighten the hinge mechanism with a wingnut, so the angle can be adjusted.
Step 5: Sanding and Finishing
- Sand all surfaces with 120 and then 220 grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
- Apply wood stain or paint according to your preference.
- Finish with polyurethane or a protective clear coat for durability.
Step 6: Final Assembly and Testing
- Assemble the base, support pole, and music tray.
- Check for smooth height and tilt adjustments.
- Tighten all screws and bolts.
Congratulations! You’ve built your own adjustable wooden music stand. Perfect for musicians and a great addition to any home studio or performance space.
