How to create a wooden letterpress

Creating a wooden letterpress involves crafting wooden type blocks and assembling a functional press. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own wooden letterpress:

Materials & Tools Needed

  • Hardwood (maple, cherry, or birch for durability)
  • Jigsaw or CNC router
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Chisels and carving tools (if hand-carving)
  • Ink roller (brayer)
  • Printing ink
  • Press bed (flat wooden or metal surface)
  • Paper for printing

Step 1: Design the Type

  1. Choose a typeface that is bold and well-defined for easy carving.
  2. Design the letters in reverse (mirror image) using software like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape.
  3. Print the design and transfer it onto the wooden blocks using carbon paper or by gluing the printout directly onto the wood.

Step 2: Cut Out the Letters

  1. Use a jigsaw, scroll saw, or CNC router to cut out each letter.
  2. If hand-carving, use chisels and gouges to shape the letters.
  3. Ensure each letter is at a consistent height to maintain uniform ink application.

Step 3: Smooth and Finish

  1. Sand each letter thoroughly to remove rough edges.
  2. Apply a wood sealant or lacquer to protect the type from ink absorption.
  3. Let the letters dry completely before assembling them.

Step 4: Assemble the Press

  1. Use a sturdy wooden board as the base (press bed).
  2. Arrange the wooden letters on the bed to form words or phrases.
  3. Secure the letters with a wooden frame or removable clamps.

Step 5: Ink and Print

  1. Apply a small amount of printing ink onto a glass or metal surface.
  2. Use a brayer to spread the ink evenly.
  3. Roll the ink over the wooden type.
  4. Place a sheet of paper over the inked type.
  5. Press down evenly using a manual press or a weighted object.
  6. Carefully lift the paper to reveal your print.

Step 6: Clean and Store

  1. Wipe off excess ink with a damp cloth.
  2. Store wooden type in a dry place to prevent warping.

With this method, you can create unique and artistic letterpress prints using handmade wooden type!
