How to create a wooden ladder-style bathroom towel rack

Creating a wooden ladder-style bathroom towel rack is a great DIY project that adds a rustic, functional touch to your bathroom. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build one:

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden boards (for the ladder rungs and sides): Pine, cedar, or any hardwood you prefer.
  • Saw (circular or miter saw) to cut the wood to the right size.
  • Measuring tape.
  • Wooden dowels or screws (for assembly).
  • Wood glue (optional, for extra hold).
  • Sandpaper (or a sander) for smoothing the wood edges.
  • Wood finish or paint (optional for a personalized look).
  • Drill with bits for making holes and screws.
  • Clamps (optional but helpful for holding parts in place while you assemble).

Steps:

1. Cut the Wood to Size

  • Side Pieces: Cut two pieces of wood for the sides of the ladder. The length will depend on how tall you want the rack to be. Typically, about 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 meters) works well for a bathroom towel rack.
  • Rungs: Cut several shorter pieces of wood for the rungs. These should be about 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) long depending on how wide you want the towel rack to be. You’ll need about 4–6 rungs, but this can vary based on your design.

2. Sand the Wood

Sand all pieces to smooth out any rough edges or surfaces. This helps with a clean, professional finish and prevents splinters.

3. Mark the Placement of the Rungs

Decide where you want your rungs to go on the sides of the ladder. Typically, you’ll space them evenly, but you can adjust based on your needs. A common spacing is about 12–14 inches (30–35 cm) apart, but adjust for the size of your towels.

4. Drill Holes for the Rungs

On each side piece, mark where each rung will go. Use a drill to make holes on both sides of the ladder where the rungs will be inserted. The diameter of the holes should match the size of the rungs.

5. Assemble the Ladder

  • Insert each rung into the drilled holes. If you’re using wooden dowels, glue the ends of the dowels before inserting them into the holes for extra stability. Alternatively, you can use screws to attach the rungs to the side pieces. Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood.
  • If you prefer a more industrial look, you could also attach the rungs to the sides with metal brackets.

6. Secure the Rungs

Use clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries if you’re using wood glue. If you’re using screws, make sure each rung is tightly secured.

7. Finishing Touches

  • Once the assembly is complete, give the entire ladder rack a final sanding to smooth out the surface.
  • Apply a finish, stain, or paint if desired. A natural wood finish will give it a rustic look, while white or another color can match a more modern bathroom theme.

8. Mount or Place the Ladder

  • Freestanding: If you want to keep it freestanding, simply place the ladder against the wall.
  • Mounted: If you’d prefer to mount it to the wall, use appropriate brackets or hooks to secure it at the top.

And that’s it! You’ve got yourself a functional and stylish ladder-style towel rack. Would you prefer a more natural wood finish, or something painted to match your bathroom decor?
