How to create a wooden greeting card display stand

To create a wooden greeting card display stand, you’ll need some basic woodworking skills and materials. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build one:

Materials:

  • Wood (choose a type like pine, oak, or plywood based on your preference)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws (optional, for added stability)
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood finish (optional, to seal and protect the wood)
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (hand saw or jigsaw)
  • Drill and bit (for pilot holes)
  • Clamps (optional, to hold pieces together while the glue dries)
  • Paint or stain (optional, for finishing)

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper or sander
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil for marking

Instructions:

1. Plan Your Design

  • The first step is to decide on the dimensions. A standard greeting card is typically 5″ x 7″, so the stand should be designed to hold cards of this size.
  • You’ll need a base and upright supports. Consider how many cards you want to display—typically, a stand can hold between 3 and 5 cards.

2. Cut the Base

  • Start by cutting the base piece. A simple rectangular base (e.g., 12″ x 6″) will work well.
  • Use a saw to cut the wood to your desired size.

3. Cut the Back Support

  • For the back support, you’ll want a piece of wood about 6″ tall. The width should match the width of the base (e.g., 6″ or 8″).
  • Cut this piece and then angle the top part so it has a slight lean, allowing cards to stand at an angle for better visibility. Typically, a 15-30 degree angle works well.

4. Prepare the Card Slots

  • Decide how many slots you want. Each slot should be wide enough to hold a greeting card securely without bending it.
  • Cut thin strips of wood (around 3″ long, and 1″ wide) to create the vertical dividers for the slots.
  • Attach them to the base, spaced evenly apart, using wood glue or small nails/screws. Make sure each slot is wide enough to fit a greeting card.

5. Assembly

  • Attach the back support piece to the base. You can use wood glue for this step, or if you want extra stability, screw the pieces together.
  • If you opted to use screws, pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.

6. Sanding and Finishing

  • Sand all the edges to remove any roughness or splinters.
  • Optionally, apply a finish to your wooden stand to protect it and give it a polished look. You can use wood stain, paint, or a clear varnish depending on the style you prefer.

7. Final Assembly and Display

  • Once everything is dry and finished, place your greeting cards into the slots. The stand should now display the cards at an angle for easy viewing.

If you’d like to make it more adjustable, you could design the back support to be movable, allowing you to change the angle at which the cards are displayed. Or, you could add a small lip at the front edge of each slot to better hold the cards in place.

This project is simple, customizable, and an excellent way to showcase your greeting cards!
