How to create a wooden entryway storage system with built-in lighting

Creating a wooden entryway storage system with built-in lighting is a great way to combine functionality with style. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build one:

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • Wood: Plywood or MDF for the shelves and sides. Choose a wood type that matches the style of your home (oak, pine, etc.).
  • Lighting: LED strip lights or recessed lights. LED strips are flexible and easy to install.
  • Screws and Nails: To assemble the pieces.
  • Wood Glue: For added strength.
  • Power Drill/Screwdriver: To drive screws and holes.
  • Circular Saw or Jigsaw: To cut the wood to size.
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate dimensions.
  • Wood Finishes: Paint or wood stain to finish the look.
  • Electrical Components: If installing recessed lights, consider wiring and connectors.
  • Mounting Brackets: For supporting shelves and storage boxes.
  • Level: To ensure everything is aligned properly.

Step 1: Plan and Measure

  1. Space Assessment: Measure the size of the entryway and decide where you want to place the storage system. It could be a single wall unit, a corner unit, or a combination of shelves and hooks.
  2. Design: Sketch the storage system. Think about the types of storage you need: hooks for coats, cubbies for shoes, or shelves for bags. Incorporate lighting by deciding where the LED strips or lights will go.
  3. Lighting Layout: Determine how many lights you need, whether LED strips under each shelf or recessed lights along the top. LED strips are best for long, even lighting, while recessed lights give a more direct, focused illumination.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

  1. Cut the Panels: Using your saw, cut the wood to size according to your measurements. This includes cutting the top, bottom, sides, shelves, and any back panels.
  2. Cut Holes for Lights (if needed): For recessed lights, mark the spots where the holes should go and use a hole saw to cut them. If using LED strips, make sure you leave space for the strip to be mounted on the underside of the shelves.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Build the Box: Begin by attaching the sides to the top and bottom panels with screws or nails. Ensure the corners are square using a carpenter’s square.
  2. Install the Back Panel (optional): If your design includes a back panel for added stability, attach it now.
  3. Add Shelves or Cubbies: Install shelves or dividers based on your design. Use brackets or dado joints for extra strength. Make sure each shelf is level before securing it in place.

Step 4: Install Lighting

  1. Prepare LED Strips or Recessed Lights:
    • For LED strips, stick the adhesive backing to the underside of each shelf or in the corners. Connect the power supply to the strip.
    • For recessed lights, wire the lights into place. Drill holes in the shelves for the lights, insert the light fixtures, and connect them to the electrical wiring.
  2. Wire the Lights: For recessed lights, you’ll need to connect them to a power source. This may involve some basic electrical work, so ensure you have the necessary tools and knowledge. You can also opt for battery-powered LED strips if you want to avoid wiring.

Step 5: Finish the Wood

  1. Sanding: Sand all surfaces smoothly to remove rough edges.
  2. Painting or Staining: Apply your chosen finish to protect the wood and give it a polished look. Choose a paint or stain that suits your home’s décor.
  3. Sealing: If you use a stain, apply a clear sealer to protect the wood from dirt and moisture.

Step 6: Mount the Unit

  1. Mount to the Wall: If the storage unit is wall-mounted, use heavy-duty mounting brackets to secure it to the wall. Use a level to ensure it’s straight.
  2. Place the Storage Boxes or Organizers: For a complete entryway look, add bins or baskets on the shelves to keep shoes, hats, and other items organized.

Step 7: Final Touches

  1. Test the Lights: Ensure that all lights are working properly. Adjust their placement if needed to ensure optimal lighting.
  2. Decorate: Add hooks or a bench beneath the storage unit for added functionality. Place decorative items to enhance the look of your entryway.

This project can be customized in various ways, depending on the amount of storage you need and the design aesthetic you’re going for. Adding built-in lighting not only makes the entryway more practical but also gives it a modern, stylish touch.
