How to create a wooden entryway bench with cubbies

Building a wooden entryway bench with cubbies is a great DIY project that provides both seating and storage. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you construct one.

Materials & Tools Needed:

Materials:

  • Plywood or solid wood boards (¾” thick for the main structure)
  • 2×2 or 2×4 lumber (for additional support)
  • Wood screws (1 ¼” or 1 ½”)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Primer and paint or stain and polyurethane
  • Optional: Decorative trim or molding

Tools:

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill & drill bits
  • Measuring tape & pencil
  • Clamps
  • Sander or sanding block
  • Level
  • Kreg jig (for pocket holes, optional but recommended)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Plan & Measure

Decide on the dimensions of your bench. A standard entryway bench size is around:

  • Width: 36″–48″
  • Depth: 14″–18″
  • Height: 18″–20″

Sketch your design, including the number of cubbies. Most have 2–4 sections depending on width.

2. Cut Your Wood

Using a circular saw or table saw, cut the wood into the following pieces:

  • Top board (bench seat)
  • Bottom board (base)
  • Side panels (2)
  • Vertical dividers (1–3 depending on cubby count)
  • Back panel (optional, for a finished look)

Tip: Sand edges as you cut to avoid splinters.

3. Assemble the Frame

  • Attach the side panels to the bottom board using screws and wood glue.
  • Secure the top board to the sides using screws.
  • Ensure everything is squared using a level and clamps.

4. Install Cubby Dividers

  • Measure and mark the cubby divider positions.
  • Use pocket hole screws or regular screws with wood glue to attach dividers to the top and bottom boards.

5. Attach the Back Panel (Optional)

For a more polished look, attach a ¼” plywood sheet to the back using brad nails or screws.

6. Fill Gaps & Sand

  • Use wood filler to cover screw holes and imperfections.
  • Sand all surfaces smooth, starting with 120-grit sandpaper, then finishing with 220-grit.

7. Paint or Stain

  • For a painted finish: Apply primer, let dry, then paint with 2 coats.
  • For a stained finish: Apply wood conditioner, stain, and seal with polyurethane.

8. Add Final Touches

  • Attach trim or molding if desired.
  • Add baskets, cushions, or hooks for a finished look.

Customization Ideas:

  • Use reclaimed wood for a rustic style.
  • Add upholstered seat cushions for extra comfort.
  • Install hooks above the bench for coats and bags.
