How to create a wooden dresser with drawers

Creating a wooden dresser with drawers involves several steps, from planning and selecting the right materials to assembling the pieces. Here’s a guide to help you through the process:

Materials Needed:

  • Wood (oak, pine, or plywood for the frame, solid hardwood for the drawer fronts)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Drawer slides (optional but recommended for smooth operation)
  • Wood finish (stain, paint, or clear polyurethane)
  • Nails or finish nails
  • Drawer pull hardware
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular saw, miter saw, or table saw)
  • Drill and bits
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Design and Measurements

Start by designing the dresser and determining the number of drawers. A typical dresser might have 5-6 drawers, with varying sizes. Here are some common measurements:

  • Height: 30–36 inches
  • Width: 40–60 inches (depending on your design)
  • Depth: 16–24 inches
  • Drawer height: 5–10 inches per drawer, depending on the overall height of the dresser

Sketch your design, keeping proportions in mind, and make a detailed plan with accurate measurements.

Step 2: Cutting the Wood Pieces

Using the saw, cut the wood for the dresser frame and the individual drawers:

  • Side Panels: Cut two pieces for the side of the dresser (same height and depth).
  • Top and Bottom Panels: Cut one piece for the top and one for the bottom.
  • Back Panel: Cut a panel for the back of the dresser, typically made from plywood.
  • Drawer Sides: Cut four pieces for the sides of each drawer.
  • Drawer Fronts and Backs: Cut the front and back pieces for each drawer.
  • Drawer Bottoms: Cut thin plywood for the bottom of each drawer.

Step 3: Assembling the Dresser Frame

Begin assembling the frame of the dresser:

  1. Attach the Side Panels: Start by attaching the side panels to the top and bottom pieces using wood glue and screws. Ensure the sides are square (using a carpenter’s square).
  2. Attach the Back Panel: Secure the back panel to the frame, which provides extra support.
  3. Reinforce Corners: If needed, reinforce the corners with screws or wood dowels for added stability.

Step 4: Constructing the Drawers

Next, assemble the individual drawers:

  1. Assemble Drawer Sides: Use wood glue and nails to attach the four sides of each drawer.
  2. Attach the Drawer Front: The drawer front should be attached to the drawer box with wood glue and screws. Make sure it aligns properly with the edges of the side pieces.
  3. Install the Drawer Bottom: Attach the plywood bottom to the drawer frame. Use wood glue and screws around the edges.
  4. Install Drawer Slides: Attach drawer slides to the inside of the dresser and to the sides of each drawer, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 5: Installing the Drawers

Once the drawers are assembled:

  1. Insert the Drawers: Slide each drawer into its respective space in the dresser frame. Test to ensure that they move smoothly.
  2. Adjust the Drawer Slides: Adjust the slides as necessary to ensure a smooth operation.

Step 6: Sanding and Finishing

Before finishing, smooth out any rough edges:

  1. Sand the Dresser: Sand all surfaces, including the sides, drawers, and the top, starting with coarse sandpaper and finishing with fine sandpaper for a smooth surface.
  2. Apply Stain or Paint: Apply the finish of your choice, whether stain, paint, or a clear polyurethane. Allow it to dry between coats, sanding lightly between each coat.

Step 7: Installing Drawer Pulls

Once the finish has dried, install drawer pulls or handles on the fronts of the drawers.

  1. Mark the Position: Use a measuring tape to mark where you want the drawer pulls to go.
  2. Drill Holes: Drill holes for the screws that will secure the pulls.

Step 8: Final Touches

  • Check for Stability: Ensure the dresser is stable and all drawers function properly.
  • Clean Up: Remove any dust or excess glue.

Optional: Adding Decorative Elements

You can personalize the dresser by adding molding to the top or base or painting decorative designs on the drawer fronts.

Once the dresser is complete, you’ll have a functional and stylish piece of furniture.
