How to create a wooden bicycle rack for indoor storage

Creating a wooden bicycle rack for indoor storage can be a rewarding and practical project. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build a simple yet effective wooden bike rack.

Materials:

  • Wooden Boards: You can use plywood, pine, or any wood of your choice (approximately 1/2″ to 3/4″ thick).
  • Screws (wood screws or drywall screws, depending on the type of wood).
  • Wood Glue (optional, for extra strength).
  • Wood Finish or Paint (optional, for aesthetics and protection).
  • Saw (circular or hand saw).
  • Drill (for making holes for screws).
  • Measuring Tape and Pencil for marking.
  • Sandpaper (for smoothing the edges).

Design:

Decide on a simple design that fits your space and needs. The most common types of indoor bike racks are either a wall-mounted rack or a free-standing rack. For this guide, we’ll build a wall-mounted bike rack that can hold the bike horizontally.

Steps:

1. Measure and Plan

  • First, measure the size of your bike (wheel diameter, length, etc.) to ensure the rack will fit comfortably.
  • Determine where you want to place the rack (wall height, distance between bike wheels, etc.).
  • For a standard bike, plan for a horizontal rack with a width of at least 20-24 inches (for the width of the tires), and depth of around 10-12 inches.

2. Cut the Wood

  • Main Rack Board: Cut a piece of wood about 36-48 inches long and around 6-8 inches wide (depending on how many bikes you want to store).
  • Support Blocks: Cut two small blocks (around 4-5 inches long) to support the bike wheels.
  • Wheel Support: Cut two short strips (about 6-8 inches long) that will hold the wheels in place.

3. Drill Holes for the Bike Wheels

  • On the main rack board, mark the spots where you want to attach the wheel supports. These should be about 10-12 inches apart, depending on your bike.
  • Use a drill to make holes for the wheel supports (screws).

4. Assemble the Rack

  • Attach the Wheel Supports: Use screws or nails to attach the wheel support pieces to the main board. The goal is to create small “troughs” where the wheels will sit. Make sure these are securely fixed.
  • Add the Support Blocks: Attach the two small support blocks at the ends of the board or on either side of the bike’s frame to stabilize the bike when hung.
  • Attach the Rack to the Wall: Mark the points on the wall where the rack will go. Use screws to attach it securely, making sure it is level.

5. Finishing Touches

  • Sand any rough edges or surfaces to make the rack smooth and safe.
  • Optionally, you can finish the wood with paint, stain, or a protective wood finish to match your decor or protect the wood from wear and tear.

6. Install the Rack

  • Once the rack is ready, simply mount it on your wall. Use anchors if needed, especially if you’re mounting it on drywall without studs.

Tips:

  • Safety: Ensure that the rack is mounted securely so it doesn’t fall or tip over. Using wall studs or anchors is key for safety.
  • Customization: You can add additional features like hooks for helmets or storage for other biking gear.
  • Space Consideration: If you need to store more than one bike, you can make the rack wider, or you could make multiple racks vertically stacked.

Does this fit what you had in mind, or are you thinking of a different style or design?
