How to Build a Wooden Wall-Mounted Herb Garden Planter

A wall-mounted herb garden planter is a fantastic way to grow fresh herbs in a compact space while adding a rustic charm to your home. Whether you have a small balcony, a kitchen wall, or a backyard fence, this DIY project will allow you to enjoy fresh basil, mint, thyme, and more without taking up valuable ground space. Follow this step-by-step guide to build your own wooden herb planter.

Materials Needed

Before starting, gather the following tools and materials:

Wood and Fasteners:

  • Cedar or pressure-treated wood (durable and weather-resistant)
    • (2) Side panels: 1”x6”x18”
    • (2) Bottom panels: 1”x6”x36”
    • (3) Back slats: 1”x4”x36”
    • (1) Front panel: 1”x6”x36”
    • (2) Support strips: 1”x2”x36”
  • Wood screws (1.5” and 2” screws)
  • Wood glue

Tools:

  • Saw (circular saw or hand saw)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Measuring tape
  • Clamps
  • Wood stain or sealant
  • Brush or rag for staining

Optional:

  • Chalkboard paint or labels for plant names
  • Wall brackets for extra support

Step 1: Cut the Wood

Measure and cut the wood to the specified dimensions using a saw. If you are unsure, measure twice and cut once to ensure precision. Sand the edges to remove splinters.

Step 2: Assemble the Planter Box

  1. Attach the two side panels (18” pieces) to the bottom panel (6”x36”).
  2. Secure them with wood glue and drill pilot holes to prevent splitting.
  3. Use 1.5” screws to fasten them together.
  4. Attach the front panel (6”x36”) to enclose the box, screwing it into the side panels.

Step 3: Create the Back Support

  1. Lay out the three back slats (4”x36”) evenly spaced.
  2. Attach them to the support strips (1”x2”x36”) using wood glue and screws.
  3. This creates a strong and decorative back support to mount your planter.

Step 4: Attach the Planter to the Back Panel

  1. Position the planter box against the back slats at the bottom.
  2. Drill screws through the back panel into the rear of the planter box.
  3. Make sure the assembly is square before tightening all screws.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

  • Smooth all surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper, then finish with 220-grit for a refined look.
  • Apply a wood stain, weatherproof sealer, or paint, depending on your preference.
  • Let it dry completely before mounting.

Step 6: Mounting the Planter

  1. Choose a sturdy wall surface such as a fence, exterior wall, or kitchen backsplash.
  2. Use strong wall anchors and screws to secure the planter.
  3. Ensure the weight is evenly distributed and check for level alignment before tightening completely.
  4. If needed, install brackets underneath for extra support.

Step 7: Plant Your Herbs

  1. Line the inside with landscape fabric to retain soil while allowing drainage.
  2. Fill with well-draining potting mix.
  3. Plant your favorite herbs like basil, parsley, rosemary, and oregano.
  4. Water lightly and place the planter in an area with adequate sunlight.

Maintenance Tips

  • Water your herbs regularly but avoid overwatering.
  • Trim herbs frequently to encourage growth.
  • Consider rotating plants based on the season.
  • Refresh the soil annually for best results.

With your DIY wooden wall-mounted herb garden, you can enjoy fresh herbs year-round while saving space. Get creative with different finishes or sizes to match your aesthetic.
