Building a wooden under-bed storage drawer is a great way to maximize space while adding a custom touch to your bedroom. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build one.
Materials & Tools Needed:
Materials:
- Plywood (¾” thick) – for the bottom and sides
- 1×6 or 1×8 boards – for the sides (choose height based on storage needs)
- Wood screws (1¼” or 1½”)
- Wood glue
- Drawer pulls/handles
- Casters (wheels) or furniture sliders
- Sandpaper
- Paint or stain (optional)
Tools:
- Circular saw or table saw
- Drill and screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Clamps
- Wood filler (if needed)
Step 1: Measure Your Space
- Measure the height, width, and depth of the space under your bed.
- Subtract about 1–2 inches from the height to allow easy sliding in and out.
Step 2: Cut the Wood
- Cut a plywood base to the desired size.
- Cut side boards to match the dimensions of your base.
Step 3: Assemble the Frame
Attach the sides to the bottom:
- Apply wood glue along the bottom edges of the side pieces.
- Secure them using screws or nails.
Secure the corners:
- Clamp the corners while drilling pilot holes.
- Fasten with screws to ensure durability.
Step 4: Attach Casters or Sliders
- If using casters, attach them to the four corners of the base for smooth movement.
- If using sliders, place felt pads or plastic gliders on the bottom.
Step 5: Add a Handle or Pull
- Center the handle on one of the front side panels and attach it with screws.
Step 6: Sand & Finish
- Sand all edges and surfaces smoothly.
- Apply wood stain, paint, or a clear finish for durability and aesthetics.
Step 7: Let It Dry & Use It
- Allow the finish to dry completely.
- Slide your new under-bed storage drawer into place!
