How to build a wooden trundle bed for extra sleeping space

Building a wooden trundle bed is a great project for creating extra sleeping space. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make one:

Materials Needed:

  • 2×4 lumber (for the frame)
  • 1×6 lumber (for the slats)
  • Plywood (for the base)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Wood finish or paint (optional)
  • Casters (for easy rolling)
  • Sandpaper
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular or miter)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Wood clamps (optional)

Tools:

  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Drill with screwdriver bits
  • Sandpaper or an electric sander
  • Wood clamps (for holding pieces in place while screwing)
  • Safety goggles and ear protection

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Frame

  • Measure and Cut the Wood:
    • Cut the 2×4 lumber to the desired length for the trundle bed’s frame. Generally, the standard dimensions for a twin bed are 38″ x 75″, so you will need to cut 4 pieces of 2×4 to create the sides and 2 cross pieces for the bed’s width.
  • Assemble the Frame:
    • Lay out the 2×4 pieces to form a rectangular shape. Screw them together at the corners using wood screws. Ensure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner.

2. Build the Slat Support System

  • Cut the Slats:
    • Cut the 1×6 lumber into slats that will support the mattress. You should have enough slats to cover the width of the bed with about 2″ of space between each slat.
  • Attach the Slats:
    • Lay the slats across the frame. Screw them into place using wood screws. You can space them evenly or add extra slats in the middle for additional support, depending on how sturdy you want it to be.

3. Create the Trundle Drawer

  • Cut the Sides for the Drawer:
    • Cut four pieces of 2×4 to make the trundle’s sides. These pieces should be slightly shorter than the frame to allow space for the mattress to fit.
  • Attach the Drawer Sides:
    • Screw the sides of the trundle drawer together, forming a box shape. Make sure the corners are square.
  • Add Casters:
    • Attach four casters to the bottom of the trundle. These will allow you to slide the trundle bed under the main bed easily.

4. Assemble the Trundle Bed Frame

  • Install the Plywood Base:
    • Cut a piece of plywood to fit the inside dimensions of the trundle. This will be the base that holds the mattress.
    • Attach the plywood base to the trundle drawer using wood screws or nails.
  • Secure the Trundle Frame Under the Main Bed:
    • Make sure the trundle fits under the main bed frame when it’s not in use. You may need to adjust the size of the drawer frame slightly to ensure it fits.

5. Finishing Touches

  • Sand the Wood:
    • Use sandpaper or an electric sander to smooth the edges and surfaces of the frame and trundle.
  • Paint or Stain the Wood (optional):
    • If desired, apply a wood finish or paint to match your room decor.
  • Add a Mattress:
    • Place a mattress on the trundle bed. Make sure it’s thin enough for the trundle to fit under the main bed when not in use.

Tips:

  • Customize the Size: You can adjust the dimensions based on the size of the mattress you want to use. Just make sure the trundle fits comfortably under the main bed.
  • Use Heavy-Duty Casters: If the trundle is going to be used frequently, consider using stronger casters to handle the weight of the mattress and provide smoother rolling.
  • Add a Stopper: Install a stopper at the end of the trundle to prevent it from sliding all the way out of the frame.

This project can be a fun weekend build and will add valuable extra sleeping space when needed.
