How to build a wooden spice rack with angled shelves

To build a wooden spice rack with angled shelves, follow these step-by-step instructions:

Materials Needed:

  • 1 wooden board (1″ x 12″ x 6’ for the back panel)
  • 1 wooden board (1″ x 6″ x 4’ for the shelves)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Wood finish or paint (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Saw (circular saw or miter saw)
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Clamps

Instructions:

1. Design and Measurements

  • Determine the Size: Decide how long and wide you want the spice rack to be. A common size for a spice rack is about 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
  • Angled Shelves: The angled shelves will be tilted between 10°-20° to keep the spices visible. Decide on the angle of tilt for your shelves (I recommend 15° for a good balance).

2. Cut the Back Panel

  • Cut your 1″ x 12″ board to the desired length for the back panel. If your rack will be 24 inches wide, measure and cut the board to 24 inches long.

3. Cut the Shelves

  • Cut your 1″ x 6″ board into shelves of equal length (for example, 24 inches). The number of shelves depends on how many you want to add to your spice rack. Make sure each shelf is slightly shorter than the back panel to allow for space between shelves.
  • Angle the Shelves: Using a miter saw, cut one edge of each shelf at your chosen angle (10°-20°). If you’re using a circular saw, you can tilt the saw blade to make angled cuts.

4. Cut Shelf Supports (Optional)

  • To prevent the shelves from sliding out of place, cut small triangular supports for each shelf. These can be about 1″ high and wide enough to secure each shelf at the chosen angle.

5. Sand the Edges

  • Sand all the edges of your wood pieces, including the shelves and the back panel. Start with medium-grit sandpaper and finish with fine-grit to make the wood smooth.

6. Attach the Shelves to the Back Panel

  • Measure and mark where each shelf will go. Use a pencil to mark the location of the angled cut.
  • Apply wood glue to the angled edge of each shelf, and then attach it to the back panel.
  • Drill pilot holes through the back panel into the shelves, ensuring you don’t split the wood. Insert screws to securely hold the shelves in place.
  • If you’re using shelf supports, attach them at each corner of the shelf to reinforce the angle.

7. Finish the Spice Rack

  • Once everything is assembled, you can sand the entire piece again for a smooth finish.
  • Optionally, you can paint or stain the spice rack to match your kitchen’s decor. Apply wood finish or clear coat to protect the wood.

8. Mount the Spice Rack

  • If you want to mount the spice rack on a wall, measure and drill holes in the top corners of the back panel.
  • Use screws and wall anchors to secure the rack to the wall.

Tips:

  • Make sure the shelf angles are consistent across all shelves.
  • Leave enough space between shelves for the height of your spice jars.
  • If you prefer a more decorative look, you can add molding or trim to the edges of the shelves and back panel.

Once complete, your angled spice rack will allow easy access to your spices while adding a functional and stylish touch to your kitchen!
