How to Build a Wooden Outdoor Bench with a Built-in Cooler

A wooden outdoor bench with a built-in cooler is a perfect DIY project for adding both seating and functionality to your patio, backyard, or deck. This guide will walk you through the steps of constructing a sturdy and stylish bench that features a hidden cooler compartment to keep your drinks chilled while you relax outdoors.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • (5) 2x4x8’ pressure-treated lumber (for the frame and legs)
  • (4) 1x6x8’ cedar or treated wood (for the seat and backrest)
  • (1) 1x4x8’ board (for the cooler support)
  • (1) Small cooler (size of your choice)
  • 2.5” deck screws
  • Wood glue
  • Hinges (for the cooler lid)
  • Outdoor wood stain or paint
  • Weatherproof sealant

Tools:

  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Measuring tape
  • Speed square
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper or power sander
  • Paintbrush or roller

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Design and Measurements

Before you start cutting, decide on the size of your bench. A standard outdoor bench is around 48” to 60” long, 18” deep, and 18” high. The built-in cooler compartment should be centered and fit snugly. Measure your cooler’s dimensions to ensure a proper fit.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

Use your saw to cut the wood according to these standard measurements:

  • Frame pieces (2x4s):

    • (2) Side rails – 48” long
    • (3) Cross supports – 18” long
    • (4) Legs – 18” long
    • (2) Cooler compartment supports – cut to match the cooler width
  • Seat slats (1x6s):

    • (3) 48” long boards for the seating area
  • Cooler Lid:

    • (1) Board cut to match the opening of the cooler compartment
    • (1) Additional piece for a handle if desired

Step 3: Assemble the Bench Frame

  1. Attach the side rails to the legs using 2.5” deck screws and wood glue, ensuring everything is square.
  2. Secure the cross supports to reinforce the frame. Position one cross support in the center where the cooler will be placed.
  3. Attach two additional supports on either side of the cooler section. These will hold the cooler in place.

Step 4: Install the Seat Slats

  1. Lay the seat slats across the bench frame, leaving about a 1/4” gap between each for water drainage.
  2. Mark and cut out an opening in the seat for the cooler to fit. Ensure the cut aligns with the inside dimensions of the cooler.
  3. Secure the seat slats to the frame using screws.

Step 5: Insert the Cooler

  1. Place the cooler into the opening. It should rest on the support beams.
  2. If necessary, add additional wooden brackets around the cooler to keep it secure.

Step 6: Attach the Cooler Lid

  1. Cut a board to match the cooler opening.
  2. Install hinges on one side to create a flip-up lid.
  3. If desired, attach a small handle for easy lifting.

Step 7: Sand and Finish

  1. Sand all edges and surfaces to remove splinters and rough areas.
  2. Apply an outdoor wood stain or paint to protect the wood from weather elements.
  3. Seal with a weatherproof sealant to extend the bench’s durability.

Step 8: Final Assembly and Placement

  • Let the stain or paint dry completely before placing the bench outdoors.
  • Position your new bench in your favorite outdoor spot and enjoy!

This DIY outdoor bench with a built-in cooler is a fantastic addition to any backyard, offering both a stylish seating solution and a practical way to keep your drinks cold.
