How to build a wooden mobile workbench with locking wheels

Building a wooden mobile workbench with locking wheels is a great way to create a sturdy and portable workspace for your garage or workshop. Below is a step-by-step guide to building one.

Materials & Tools Needed

Materials:

  • 2×4 lumber (for the frame and legs)
  • ¾-inch plywood (for the tabletop and lower shelf)
  • 4 heavy-duty locking caster wheels
  • Wood screws (2½-inch and 1½-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Sandpaper (120 & 220 grit)
  • Polyurethane (for protection)

Tools:

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill/driver and drill bits
  • Tape measure
  • Speed square
  • Clamps
  • Sander or sandpaper
  • Level

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut the Wood

  • Cut the 2x4s for the workbench frame:
    • 4 legs at desired height (typically 34-36 inches)
    • 4 long frame pieces for the top (length depends on your preferred size)
    • 4 short frame pieces for the top (width minus 3 inches for leg thickness)
    • 4 lower frame pieces (same dimensions as the top frame)
  • Cut the plywood for the top surface and lower shelf.

Step 2: Build the Frame

  1. Assemble the top frame using the long and short 2x4s.
    • Use wood glue and screws to secure joints.
    • Check for squareness using a speed square.
  2. Repeat for the bottom frame to create support for the shelf.
  3. Attach the legs to the corners of the top frame with screws and glue.
  4. Secure the bottom frame to the legs about 6-8 inches from the ground.

Step 3: Install the Plywood Surfaces

  1. Place the ¾-inch plywood on the top frame and attach it with 1½-inch screws.
  2. Do the same for the bottom shelf, securing it to the lower frame.
  3. Sand the edges for a smooth finish.

Step 4: Attach the Casters

  1. Flip the workbench upside down.
  2. Mark and pre-drill holes for each caster wheel.
  3. Attach the locking casters to each leg with screws and washers.
  4. Ensure all wheels are aligned properly.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

  1. Sand all surfaces with 120-grit, then 220-grit for smoothness.
  2. Apply a wood stain or paint if desired.
  3. Seal with polyurethane for durability.
  4. Allow to dry before using.

Optional Upgrades

  • Pegboard or hooks on the side for tool storage.
  • Power strip mounted on the side for easy access to outlets.
  • Vice or clamps attached to the work surface.
  • Folding extension for extra workspace.
