How to Build a Wooden Lazy Susan for Spice Storage
A lazy Susan is a practical and stylish way to organize your spices, ensuring easy access while keeping your kitchen clutter-free. Building your own wooden lazy Susan allows you to customize its size, style, and finish to match your kitchen decor. Follow this step-by-step guide to create a functional and beautiful spice storage solution.
Materials and Tools Required
Materials:
- ¾-inch plywood or hardwood (for the base and top)
- Lazy Susan turntable bearing (6-12 inches, depending on your preference)
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
- Wood stain or paint (optional)
- Polyurethane sealant (for protection)
Tools:
- Jigsaw or circular saw
- Drill and drill bits
- Clamps
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Screwdriver
- Compass or a round template (for cutting the circular top)
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wooden Discs
- Determine the size – A standard spice rack lazy Susan typically has a diameter of 12-18 inches. Adjust according to your available space and needs.
- Mark your circles – Use a compass or a large round object to outline two circles on the plywood or hardwood. One will serve as the top platform and the other as the base.
- Cut the circles – Using a jigsaw, carefully cut along the marked lines. Sand the edges smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.
Step 2: Smooth and Prepare the Wooden Discs
- Sand both circles thoroughly to remove rough edges and imperfections. Start with 120-grit sandpaper and progress to 220-grit for a smoother finish.
- Stain or paint the wood as desired to match your kitchen decor. Allow the stain to dry completely before proceeding.
- Apply a polyurethane sealant to protect the wood from moisture and kitchen spills.
Step 3: Install the Lazy Susan Bearing
- Position the bearing – Flip the top disc upside down and place the lazy Susan bearing at the center. Mark the mounting holes.
- Attach the bearing to the top disc – Secure it using wood screws, ensuring it is tightly fixed.
- Attach the bearing to the base disc – Flip the structure over and align the base disc beneath the bearing. Secure it with screws.
Tip: Ensure the bearing spins smoothly before finalizing the attachment.
Step 4: Test and Final Adjustments
- Rotate the lazy Susan to ensure smooth movement. If there’s resistance, slightly loosen the screws and reposition them.
- Make any necessary touch-ups with stain or sealant.
Step 5: Organizing Your Spices
Once complete, place your lazy Susan in the pantry or on the countertop and arrange your spices for easy access.
This simple DIY project is a great way to enhance kitchen organization while adding a touch of craftsmanship to your home.
