Building a wooden headboard with built-in nightstands is a great way to create a functional and stylish piece of furniture. Not only does it save space, but it also provides extra storage and a neat, cohesive look. In this guide, we will walk through the steps for building a custom wooden headboard with built-in nightstands.
Materials and Tools You Will Need:
- Wood: Plywood, hardwood (like oak, maple, or pine), or MDF
- Screws: Wood screws for assembling the frame and securing the nightstands
- Wood glue: To strengthen joints
- Wood stain or paint: To finish the headboard and nightstands
- Tools:
- Saw (table saw or circular saw)
- Drill with bits
- Sandpaper or an electric sander
- Measuring tape
- Clamps
- Square for right angles
- Hammer or mallet
Step 1: Plan Your Design
Before starting the project, determine the overall dimensions of your headboard. A typical headboard is about 48–60 inches wide, with a height of 50–60 inches. The built-in nightstands should be roughly 12–16 inches deep and about 20–24 inches wide, depending on how much storage you want. Draw out the design to scale, including:
- The headboard itself
- The nightstands and their drawers or shelves
- The height of the nightstands relative to the mattress
Step 2: Cut the Pieces
Once you have your design ready, measure and cut the wood for all the parts. You will need:
- Back panel of the headboard: The full width of the bed frame, typically around 60 inches for a queen bed.
- Side panels for the nightstands: These pieces will connect the nightstands to the headboard.
- Shelves and drawer faces: These can be cut to size based on your design.
If you are using plywood or MDF for the main body, use a table saw or circular saw to make straight cuts. Sand all edges to remove roughness.
Step 3: Assemble the Nightstand Frame
Attach the side panels: Start by assembling the nightstand frame. Attach the side panels of the nightstand to the back panel (or the portion that will be part of the headboard). Use wood screws and wood glue for added stability.
Install the bottom panel: Attach the bottom panel of the nightstand, ensuring it’s level. You can use screws or nails to secure this piece.
Add the shelf or drawer system: If your nightstand includes shelves, install them at the desired height inside the frame. Alternatively, if you are using drawers, you will need to build the drawer boxes, slide tracks, and install the drawer faces.
Step 4: Attach the Nightstands to the Headboard
Now that the nightstands are built, you need to attach them to the back panel of the headboard. Depending on your design, the nightstands may be flush with the sides of the headboard or inset slightly for a more recessed look.
Align the nightstands with the headboard: Place the nightstands on either side of the headboard, ensuring they are evenly spaced and level.
Secure the connection: Use screws and wood glue to attach the nightstand frames to the headboard’s back panel. If you’re using plywood, it’s essential to pre-drill the holes to avoid splitting the wood.
Step 5: Install the Top Panel
Once the side panels and nightstands are attached to the headboard, install the top panel that will complete the headboard’s frame. This piece should extend slightly beyond the nightstands to create a finished, cohesive look.
Attach the top piece: Use screws or nails to secure the top piece to the back of the headboard, ensuring everything is aligned and square.
Reinforce the structure: To ensure stability, add corner braces or extra wood supports along the backside of the frame, especially if the headboard is tall or will support heavy decor.
Step 6: Sand and Finish the Headboard
With the basic structure built, it’s time to finish the piece.
Sand all surfaces: Use medium-grit sandpaper (around 120-grit) to smooth out any rough edges or surfaces, followed by fine-grit sandpaper (around 220-grit) for a smooth finish. Sand along the grain of the wood.
Apply stain or paint: Choose a stain or paint that suits the decor of your room. Apply stain in thin coats, wiping off any excess with a clean rag. If you’re painting, use a primer first and then apply a few coats of paint for a smooth finish.
Protect with polyurethane: After staining or painting, apply a protective coat of polyurethane to help preserve the finish and protect the wood from damage over time.
Step 7: Install the Headboard and Nightstands
Once the finish is dry, it’s time to attach the headboard to your bed frame. Depending on your bed, you may need to use brackets or screws to secure the headboard to the frame. Ensure the headboard is centered and level.
For a finished look, consider adding:
- LED lighting above or around the headboard
- Decorative panels for a more intricate design
- Cushioned fabric along the back for comfort
Step 8: Enjoy Your New Headboard with Built-In Nightstands
Once installed, you have a functional and beautiful headboard with nightstands that not only complements your room’s aesthetic but also adds practical storage space.
This project might take a weekend or two depending on your experience level, but the result will be a custom piece that enhances your bedroom while saving space and adding value.
