How to build a wooden garden bench with a backrest

Building a wooden garden bench with a backrest is a great project for any woodworking enthusiast. With the right materials and tools, you can create a sturdy and stylish piece of furniture for your outdoor space. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build a simple, yet durable wooden garden bench.

Materials and Tools

  • Materials:

    • 2 x 4 lumber (for the seat and backrest support)
    • 1 x 4 lumber (for the seat slats and backrest slats)
    • 4 screws or bolts (for securing the backrest)
    • Wood glue
    • Sandpaper or a power sander
    • Outdoor wood finish or stain (to protect the bench from the elements)
  • Tools:

    • Saw (table saw or circular saw)
    • Drill with bits
    • Screwdriver
    • Measuring tape
    • Wood clamps
    • Square tool (for accurate angles)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Plan Your Bench Dimensions

Start by deciding on the overall dimensions of your bench. A common size for a garden bench is approximately:

  • Length: 48-60 inches (for seating 2-3 people)
  • Seat Height: 17-18 inches from the ground
  • Backrest Height: 32-36 inches (including the seat)

Make sure to adjust these measurements based on the space where the bench will go and your personal preferences.

Step 2: Cut the Lumber

You’ll need to cut your lumber to the correct lengths:

  1. For the legs: Cut four pieces of 2×4 lumber to 18 inches for the front legs and 16 inches for the back legs.
  2. For the seat supports: Cut two pieces of 2×4 lumber to 48 inches for the seat frame.
  3. For the seat slats: Cut eight pieces of 1×4 lumber to 48 inches for the seat slats.
  4. For the backrest: Cut two pieces of 2×4 lumber to 32 inches for the backrest frame.
  5. For the backrest slats: Cut six pieces of 1×4 lumber to 32 inches for the backrest slats.

Step 3: Assemble the Seat Frame

  1. Start by attaching the two 48-inch seat support pieces to the legs. Use wood glue and screws or bolts for extra stability. The legs should be positioned at each end of the seat supports, and they should form a rectangular frame.
  2. Make sure the frame is square, using a square tool to ensure the angles are 90 degrees.

Step 4: Attach the Seat Slats

  1. Lay out the 1×4 seat slats across the seat frame. Leave a small gap (about 1/2 inch) between each slat for drainage.
  2. Secure each slat with wood screws or nails, placing them across the seat frame evenly. Make sure to drill pilot holes first to prevent splitting the wood.

Step 5: Assemble the Backrest Frame

  1. Attach the two 32-inch backrest support pieces to the back legs using screws or wood glue. The backrest supports should be attached at the top of the back legs, forming a rectangular frame.
  2. Make sure the frame is square and level.

Step 6: Attach the Backrest Slats

  1. Lay the 1×4 backrest slats across the backrest frame. Space the slats evenly, leaving a small gap between each one.
  2. Secure the slats to the backrest frame with screws or wood glue. Again, drill pilot holes first to avoid cracking the wood.

Step 7: Attach the Backrest to the Seat Frame

  1. Position the backrest frame at a comfortable angle behind the seat. For most people, an angle of about 100-110 degrees is ideal.
  2. Use screws or bolts to attach the backrest to the seat frame. Ensure that the backrest is solidly secured.

Step 8: Sand and Finish

  1. Sand the entire bench, smoothing rough edges and surfaces. This step is important to prevent splinters and ensure a polished look.
  2. Apply an outdoor wood finish or stain to protect the bench from the elements. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application.

Step 9: Final Touches

Once the finish has dried, your wooden garden bench is ready to be placed in your garden or patio area. You can add cushions for extra comfort or leave it as-is for a rustic look.

This simple wooden garden bench with a backrest can be customized by adjusting the dimensions, adding armrests, or incorporating decorative elements. With a little time and effort, you’ll have a beautiful and functional piece of outdoor furniture.
