How to build a wooden entryway bench with a flip-top lid

Building a wooden entryway bench with a flip-top lid is a rewarding project that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal. This bench not only serves as a place to sit when putting on shoes but also provides ample storage space. Below is a step-by-step guide to building a simple yet durable flip-top lid entryway bench.

Materials Needed:

  • 1×12 boards (for the seat, sides, and back of the bench)
  • 2×2 boards (for the frame)
  • Plywood (for the bottom of the bench and the lid)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Hinges (for the flip-top lid)
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Wood finish or paint
  • Wood filler (optional, for holes or gaps)
  • Safety equipment (gloves, goggles)

Tools Needed:

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill with bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood clamps
  • Clamps for the hinges (optional)
  • Sander or sanding block

Step 1: Cutting the Wood

Start by measuring and cutting the wood pieces according to the desired size of your bench. Here’s a basic guide for cutting:

  • For the seat: Cut one piece of the 1×12 board to the length of your bench (typically 36-48 inches, depending on your space).
  • For the sides and back: Cut two pieces of the 1×12 board to the height of your bench (typically 18-20 inches). Then, cut one piece for the back to the width of your seat (this piece should match the length of the seat).
  • For the frame: Cut four pieces of the 2×2 board to create the frame for the base. Two should match the length of your seat, and two should match the depth of the bench (roughly 16-18 inches).
  • For the lid: Cut a piece of plywood to match the dimensions of your bench seat (length x width). For a clean finish, you may choose to edge the plywood with the same 1×12 board.

Step 2: Assembling the Frame

Using the 2×2 boards, begin assembling the frame of the bench. Attach the side pieces to the front and back pieces using wood screws and wood glue for added strength. Ensure the frame is square, which can be checked by measuring the diagonals—both should be equal.

Attach the plywood to the frame using wood screws around the perimeter, making sure it’s flush with the top of the 2×2 frame.

Step 3: Attaching the Back and Sides

Now, attach the 1×12 side pieces to the frame, securing them with screws. Ensure the edges are flush with the frame for a seamless look. If desired, you can leave the back open or attach the back piece to the frame.

Step 4: Preparing the Flip-Top Lid

Take the plywood piece you cut earlier for the lid and trim it to fit the bench, leaving about 1/4 inch on all sides for expansion.

Attach any edging or trim pieces around the plywood for a finished look. This can be done by cutting additional 1×12 strips and gluing them to the edges of the plywood. This will also help to reinforce the lid.

Step 5: Installing the Hinges

Flip the bench frame upside down and attach the hinges to the back edge of the frame. Position the hinges about 3-4 inches from each end of the lid. Attach the other half of the hinges to the plywood lid.

Make sure the hinges are aligned properly so the lid will open smoothly. It’s also helpful to use a support chain or prop to hold the lid open when in use.

Step 6: Sanding the Bench

After all the pieces are assembled, it’s time to sand the entire bench. Start with medium-grit sandpaper to smooth rough edges and surfaces, then finish with fine-grit sandpaper for a polished surface. Be sure to pay attention to the lid edges, as these will be frequently touched.

Step 7: Finishing the Bench

Once the bench is sanded and smooth, it’s time to finish it with your preferred wood finish. A clear polyurethane finish will help protect the wood while maintaining the natural look. If you want a painted look, you can apply a primer followed by paint.

Apply multiple coats of finish as necessary, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding the next.

Step 8: Final Assembly

Once the finish is dry, the bench is ready for final assembly. Ensure all screws are tightened, the lid opens and closes smoothly, and the bench feels sturdy.

Step 9: Enjoy Your New Entryway Bench

Now you have a beautiful and functional flip-top lid entryway bench! This piece will not only add charm to your space but also provide practical storage for shoes, gloves, hats, or other small items.

For added convenience, you can line the interior with soft felt or a cushion to store delicate items or provide extra comfort.
