How to build a wooden end table with a slatted lower shelf

Building a wooden end table with a slatted lower shelf is a satisfying woodworking project that allows you to create a functional and stylish piece for your home. This guide will walk you through each step to ensure a successful build.

Materials Needed

  • 1×6 lumber (for the tabletop and slats)
  • 1×4 lumber (for the legs and lower shelf frame)
  • Wood screws (2” and 1”)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (80, 120, 220 grit)
  • Finish (stain, varnish, or polyurethane)
  • Drill and bits
  • Saw (circular saw or miter saw)
  • Measuring tape
  • Square
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cut the Lumber Pieces

Tabletop:

  • Cut the 1×6 lumber into pieces for the tabletop. The size of the tabletop will depend on your design, but a typical end table is about 18” x 24”.
  • Cut three to four pieces of 1×6, depending on the length you want the tabletop to be, and lay them side by side.

Legs:

  • Cut the 1×4 lumber into four equal-length pieces for the legs. A common leg length is 24” for an average-height end table.

Lower Shelf Frame:

  • Cut the 1×4 lumber for the frame of the lower shelf. You’ll need four pieces: two for the front and back (same length as the table), and two for the sides (same width as the table).

Slats for the Lower Shelf:

  • Cut several pieces of 1×6 lumber for the slats. These will be placed horizontally across the frame and should be spaced evenly. A typical spacing is about ½” between slats. You will need approximately 5 to 7 pieces, depending on the length of your lower shelf frame.

Step 2: Assemble the Tabletop

  • Lay the cut 1×6 pieces for the tabletop next to each other.
  • Apply wood glue between each piece to create a solid bond.
  • Use clamps to hold the pieces together and allow the glue to dry for at least 30 minutes.
  • After the glue has dried, use wood screws (1”) to secure the pieces together from the underside of the tabletop, drilling at an angle to avoid splitting the wood.
  • Allow the glue to set for several hours or as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 3: Construct the Frame for the Lower Shelf

  • Lay out the four 1×4 pieces for the lower shelf frame.
  • Attach the two shorter pieces to the longer ones, forming a rectangle. Use wood glue and screws (2”) to secure the joints at each corner.
  • Ensure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals to confirm the frame is even.

Step 4: Attach the Slats to the Lower Shelf Frame

  • Place the slats across the frame, making sure the spacing is even. You can use a small spacer block to maintain consistent gaps.
  • Attach each slat to the frame using wood glue and 1” screws. Be sure to pre-drill the holes to avoid splitting the wood.
  • Once all the slats are attached, allow the glue to dry for several hours.

Step 5: Attach the Legs to the Tabletop

  • Position the legs on each corner of the tabletop. The legs should be flush with the edges of the tabletop.
  • Secure each leg with wood screws (2”). You may also add corner brackets for additional strength if desired.
  • Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws to avoid splitting the wood.
  • Ensure the legs are perpendicular to the tabletop by using a square.

Step 6: Assemble the Lower Shelf to the Legs

  • Position the lower shelf frame under the tabletop, aligning it with the legs.
  • Attach the frame to the legs using wood screws (2”) at each corner where the frame meets the legs.
  • Make sure everything is square and level before securing the frame in place.

Step 7: Sand the Table

  • Begin by sanding the entire table with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots or saw marks.
  • Follow up with 120-grit sandpaper for a smoother finish.
  • Finish with 220-grit sandpaper for a fine, polished surface.
  • Sand in the direction of the wood grain for the best results.

Step 8: Apply the Finish

  • Apply your desired wood finish, such as stain, varnish, or polyurethane. Use a clean brush or cloth to apply an even coat, following the grain of the wood.
  • Allow the first coat to dry as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Sand lightly with 220-grit sandpaper between coats to ensure a smooth surface.
  • Apply 2-3 coats of finish for added durability and a professional look.

Step 9: Final Assembly

  • After the finish has dried, check for any imperfections or rough spots and sand them out if necessary.
  • Reassemble the table by ensuring all joints are tight and secure.
  • Clean up any excess glue or finish that may have dripped during assembly.

Step 10: Enjoy Your New Wooden End Table

Once the finish is completely dry, your wooden end table with a slatted lower shelf is ready to be used. Place it in your living room or any other space to add a beautiful, functional piece to your home.

By following these steps, you can create a sturdy and stylish wooden end table with a slatted lower shelf that will last for years to come. If you’re interested in expanding your woodworking skills, consider exploring additional projects like coffee tables or bookshelves to complement your end table.
