How to build a wooden dog food storage bin with a scoop holder

Building a wooden dog food storage bin with a scoop holder is a great project for any woodworking enthusiast. Not only will it keep your dog’s food organized and fresh, but it will also add a touch of charm to your space. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build this useful and attractive piece of furniture.

Materials Needed:

  • Wood (1×12 or 1×10 pine boards or any preferred hardwood)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Wood finish or stain (optional)
  • Hinges for the lid
  • Latch or hook to keep the lid closed
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular or miter saw)
  • Drill with bits for screws and hinges
  • Wood filler (optional for imperfections)
  • Scoop holder (a small hook or bracket)

Step 1: Plan the Dimensions

Before cutting your wood, plan the size of the bin based on how much dog food you need to store. A typical dog food storage bin can be around 18” tall, 12” wide, and 18” deep, but you can adjust the dimensions based on your needs. If you want a larger or smaller storage unit, adjust the measurements accordingly. Make sure to include space for the scoop holder on one side of the bin.

Step 2: Cut the Pieces

Once you have the dimensions, cut the following pieces:

  • 2 side panels: These should be the full height of the bin, minus the bottom. For example, if the bin is 18” tall, cut two 18” long pieces.
  • Front and back panels: These should be the width of the bin. For a 12” wide bin, cut two pieces that are 12” long.
  • Bottom panel: This will be the width by depth of the bin. For a bin with 12” width and 18” depth, cut one piece that’s 12” x 18”.
  • Lid: This piece should be a little wider than the top of the bin. For example, cut a lid that is 13” x 19” (to overhang slightly).

You’ll also want a small piece (about 4” long) for the scoop holder, which can be either a small hook or a bracket that you’ll attach to one of the side panels.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

Start by assembling the frame of the bin. Begin with the bottom piece. Attach the two side panels to the bottom using wood screws and wood glue for extra strength. Then, attach the front and back panels to the sides, forming a rectangular box. Ensure everything is square by using a carpenter’s square or checking the diagonals for equal length.

Step 4: Attach the Lid Hinges

Once the bin frame is assembled, you can attach the lid. Place the lid on top of the bin, and then install the hinges on the back of the bin. You can use two or three medium-sized hinges, depending on the size and weight of the lid. Ensure the lid opens and closes smoothly, and it is aligned properly with the edges of the bin.

For added convenience, install a small latch or hook on the front of the lid to keep it securely closed.

Step 5: Install the Scoop Holder

On one of the side panels, measure and mark the spot where you’d like the scoop holder to be placed. The holder could be a small hook, a bracket, or even a piece of scrap wood that sticks out to hold the scoop. If you’re using a hook, simply screw it into place. Make sure it’s positioned at a comfortable height so you can easily hang the scoop when not in use.

Step 6: Sand and Finish

Once everything is assembled, it’s time to sand the wood. Start with medium-grit sandpaper and work your way to fine grit for a smooth finish. Make sure to smooth out any rough edges and corners, as these can be a safety hazard.

After sanding, you can finish the wood with a stain or clear wood finish if you prefer. This will protect the wood and give it a nice polished look. Allow the finish to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 7: Optional Touches

If you want to add an extra touch to your dog food storage bin, consider painting it with a pet-safe paint or adding some decorative touches. You can stencil your dog’s name on the front or add a design that fits your home’s décor. Be sure to use non-toxic paint if your dog likes to explore new things!

Step 8: Load the Dog Food and Scoop

Once the bin is finished and dry, it’s time to fill it with your dog’s food. Open the lid, and start filling the bin with the appropriate amount of food for your pet. Place the scoop on its holder and enjoy the convenience of having everything in one organized, easy-to-access place.

Final Tips:

  • Airflow: If you want the food to stay fresh for longer, consider drilling a few small holes in the side of the bin for ventilation.
  • Size: Make sure the bin is big enough to hold several weeks’ worth of food but not too large that it becomes cumbersome.
  • Scoop: Choose a scoop that’s large enough to measure out your dog’s food portions but still small enough to fit neatly in the holder.

This project is a great way to combine functionality with a bit of craftsmanship. Not only will you have a custom-built dog food storage solution, but the added scoop holder makes feeding time that much easier.
