How to Build a Wooden Cigar Humidor with a Hygrometer

A cigar humidor is essential for keeping cigars fresh by maintaining optimal humidity levels. A well-crafted wooden humidor not only preserves your cigars but also adds a touch of elegance to your collection. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to build a high-quality wooden cigar humidor with a hygrometer.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials

  • Hardwood (such as Spanish cedar, mahogany, or maple)
  • Spanish cedar veneer or solid Spanish cedar lining
  • High-quality wood glue
  • Brass hinges
  • Small latch or magnetic closure
  • Humidifier
  • Analog or digital hygrometer
  • Sealant (polyurethane or shellac for exterior finish)
  • Felt pads (optional, for base protection)

Tools

  • Table saw or circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Router (optional, for decorative edges)
  • Wood clamps
  • Sandpaper (120–400 grit)
  • Chisels
  • Drill and bits
  • Wood screws
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood stain or finish (if desired)

Step 1: Choosing and Cutting the Wood

  1. Select the Wood – Choose hardwood for the exterior of your humidor. Spanish cedar is the preferred lining material due to its natural moisture retention and mold resistance.
  2. Measure and Cut Panels – Cut five pieces for the box:
    • Bottom panel: 12” x 8”
    • Front and back panels: 12” x 4”
    • Side panels: 8” x 4”
    • Lid panel: 12” x 8”
    • If you want a thicker lid, glue two pieces together before cutting to size.

Step 2: Assembling the Humidor Box

  1. Dry Fit the Pieces – Before gluing, ensure all parts fit properly.
  2. Apply Wood Glue – Spread glue evenly along the edges and join the panels together.
  3. Clamp and Let Dry – Use wood clamps to hold the box firmly in place. Allow at least 12 hours for the glue to cure.
  4. Reinforce with Screws (Optional) – If desired, reinforce corners with small wood screws or dowels for additional strength.

Step 3: Installing the Spanish Cedar Lining

  1. Cut the Lining – Spanish cedar should fit snugly inside the humidor. Cut pieces for the bottom, sides, and lid.
  2. Attach the Lining – Apply a thin layer of wood glue and press the cedar pieces inside. Use clamps or heavy objects to hold them in place.
  3. Sand the Interior – Smooth out any rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Step 4: Attaching the Lid and Hinges

  1. Mark Hinge Placement – Position the hinges about 1” from each edge of the back panel.
  2. Drill Pilot Holes – Carefully drill small holes for the hinge screws.
  3. Attach Hinges – Screw the hinges into place, ensuring the lid opens and closes smoothly.

Step 5: Adding the Hygrometer and Humidifier

  1. Hygrometer Installation

    • Drill a small hole in the front of the humidor for an analog hygrometer or carve a recessed area inside for a digital one.
    • Secure the hygrometer in place according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Humidifier Installation

    • Place a humidifier (gel, sponge, or electronic) inside, either attaching it to the lid or setting it at the base.
    • Ensure it can be easily accessed for refilling.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  1. Seal the Exterior – Apply a protective finish like polyurethane or shellac to enhance durability and aesthetics. Avoid sealing the interior to allow proper humidity control.
  2. Install a Closure Mechanism – Attach a latch, magnet, or small clasp to keep the lid securely shut.
  3. Add Felt Pads (Optional) – Stick felt pads to the base to prevent surface scratches.

Step 7: Seasoning the Humidor

Before storing cigars, you must season your humidor:

  1. Place a Small Dish of Distilled Water Inside – Leave it closed for 24-48 hours.
  2. Monitor Humidity Levels – The hygrometer should read 65%-75% before adding cigars.
  3. Insert Your Cigars – Once seasoned, you can start storing your cigars in optimal conditions.

Final Thoughts

Building a wooden cigar humidor is a rewarding woodworking project that provides both function and elegance. With careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, your handmade humidor will preserve cigars in perfect condition for years to come.
