How to Build a Wooden Blanket Ladder for Cozy Décor

A wooden blanket ladder is a stylish and functional way to store and display blankets in your living space. Not only does it add a rustic or farmhouse touch to your décor, but it’s also an easy and cost-effective DIY project. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to build your own wooden blanket ladder using basic materials and tools.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • 2 wooden boards (1.5” x 2.5” x 6’) – for the side rails
  • 4 wooden dowels (1” diameter, 18” long) – for the rungs
  • Wood screws (2” long) or wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Clear wood sealer (optional)

Tools:

  • Saw (miter saw, circular saw, or hand saw)
  • Drill with a 1” drill bit
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Clamps
  • Wood glue (optional for extra stability)
  • Paintbrush or rag for staining

Step 1: Cut and Prepare the Wood

Start by measuring and cutting the wood to the desired dimensions. The side rails should be around 6 feet long, but you can adjust them based on your preference. The rungs should be around 18 inches wide to provide enough space for hanging blankets.

After cutting, sand all pieces with 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out rough edges. Follow up with 220-grit for a finer finish.

Step 2: Mark and Drill Holes for Rungs

Lay out the two side rails parallel to each other on a flat surface. Using a measuring tape and pencil, mark the placement of the rungs, ensuring even spacing. A common placement is 12” apart from each other, starting 6” from the top of the ladder.

Drill 1” holes at the marked spots, making sure they are centered on the width of the side rails. If you’re using screws instead of dowels, pre-drill holes to prevent wood from splitting.

Step 3: Assemble the Blanket Ladder

Apply wood glue inside each hole and insert the dowels. Use clamps to hold everything in place while the glue dries. If using screws, secure the rungs by driving screws through the side rails into the rungs from the outside.

Double-check that everything is level and aligned before the glue sets completely. Allow at least an hour for drying.

Step 4: Sand and Finish the Ladder

Once the ladder is assembled, give it a final sanding to smooth any imperfections. Wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Apply a wood stain or paint of your choice. For a rustic look, opt for a dark stain, or go with a distressed white paint for a farmhouse feel. Let it dry completely before sealing with a clear protective coat.

Step 5: Display Your Cozy Blanket Ladder

Lean your finished wooden blanket ladder against a wall in your living room, bedroom, or even bathroom for towels. It’s a perfect way to add warmth and function to your home décor.

By following these simple steps, you can create a beautiful and practical blanket ladder that complements any cozy space.
