How I de-cat-proofed my office

De-cat-proofing your office can be a bit of a challenge, but with a little creativity and a lot of patience, it’s definitely possible to create a cat-friendly space that doesn’t turn into a disaster zone. Here’s how I transformed my office into a more organized and cat-proofed environment:

1. Securing Cables and Wires

One of the first things I noticed when my cat started hanging out in the office was her fascination with cables. Whether it was charging cables, USB cords, or power strips, they all seemed to be irresistible. The constant chewing and tangling were not only a risk for my cat but also a danger for my electronics.

To solve this, I invested in cable management solutions. I used cable organizers like zip ties and clips to keep everything neatly tucked away. For extra protection, I used protective covers around cables that my cat could chew on. I even placed some of the power strips higher up on shelves where she couldn’t reach them. This simple step made a huge difference in keeping both my office tidy and my cat safe.

2. Cat-Proofing Furniture

Cats love to climb, jump, and scratch, and my office furniture was no exception. I found that my leather chair was getting scratched up, and my bookshelves were becoming a landing pad for her acrobatic stunts.

To solve this, I added scratch pads and climbing shelves. The scratch pads were placed strategically next to my chair and bookshelves, which helped divert her attention from damaging the furniture. Additionally, I invested in a few cat towers and wall-mounted shelves for her to climb on. This gave her a space to satisfy her natural climbing instincts, while also keeping her off my work furniture.

Another trick was to cover vulnerable areas with furniture covers, which were easy to remove and wash if necessary.

3. Creating a Designated Space for the Cat

Instead of trying to keep my cat out of the office entirely, I decided to create a designated space just for her. I bought a comfy cat bed and placed it in a quiet corner of the room. I also put a scratching post and a few toys nearby to encourage her to hang out in her own space. Having this cozy corner meant she didn’t feel the need to explore the rest of the office in search of a place to rest, which helped reduce the chaos.

By creating this designated space, I found that my cat was less likely to interfere with my workspace, and it allowed me to maintain focus during work hours.

4. Protecting Surfaces from Cat Hair

If you’re a cat owner, you know that no matter how much you clean, cat hair seems to get everywhere. This is especially true when your cat spends time in your office, and the fur starts to stick to your desk, chair, and keyboard.

To tackle this issue, I began covering my office chair and desk with washable throws. These were easy to remove and clean, reducing the amount of fur accumulating on the furniture. I also invested in a good quality lint roller and a vacuum with a special attachment for pet hair. Regular cleaning helped to keep things relatively fur-free.

5. Keeping Office Plants Safe

If you’re a plant lover like me, the next issue that needed solving was keeping my office plants safe. Cats love to nibble on greenery, and some plants can be toxic to them. Not only did I need to find a way to keep my plants safe from my cat, but I also had to make sure I wasn’t introducing any potential hazards.

I started by researching safe plants for cats, and then I made sure all my plants were out of reach. I placed them on high shelves or in hanging planters. For those plants that couldn’t be moved, I used plant cages or enclosed terrariums. These solutions not only protected the plants but also ensured my cat couldn’t access anything harmful.

6. Utilizing Smart Technology

Since my cat was often curious about what was happening on my desk, I decided to make my workspace more interactive for her. I introduced a few smart gadgets that kept her engaged and distracted while I worked. For example, I set up an automatic laser toy that she could chase when I was at my desk, and a puzzle feeder to keep her busy.

In addition, I used smart cameras to keep an eye on her when I wasn’t in the room. This helped me catch any potential mischief early, whether she was trying to jump onto my desk or nibbling on things she shouldn’t be.

7. Establishing a Routine

Having a routine was key to keeping both me and my cat happy. Cats are creatures of habit, and I found that setting up a daily routine for her helped minimize the disruptions during work hours. This included regular feeding times, scheduled play sessions, and quiet nap times. I also made sure to provide her with fresh water and a clean litter box nearby.

Having a predictable routine meant that my cat knew when it was playtime and when it was time for me to focus on work. This consistency helped reduce the likelihood of her interrupting me in search of attention.

8. Adding a Cat Gate or Door

If you really need to create a clear boundary between your office and the rest of your home, consider installing a cat gate or door. This can be especially helpful if your office is located in a part of the house where your cat tends to get into trouble. A simple baby gate or a pet door can help keep her in a separate area, while still allowing her access when she needs it.

9. Using Deterrents

For those spots where I couldn’t physically prevent my cat from reaching, I turned to deterrents. There are sprays that are safe for cats but have scents that they find unpleasant, such as citrus or lavender. These helped keep her away from specific areas, like my desk or bookshelves.

I also used double-sided tape in areas where she liked to scratch, as cats generally dislike the sticky sensation. This kept her from scratching up my furniture without causing her any harm.

10. Creating a Calm Environment

Finally, one of the most important steps in de-cat-proofing my office was creating a calm environment for my cat. Cats can pick up on stress, and if they feel anxious, they might act out. I made sure to keep my office space peaceful by using soft lighting, calming music, and a variety of toys that kept her mentally stimulated.

By providing a relaxing atmosphere, both for me and for my cat, I found that she was more content in her designated space and less likely to cause disruptions during my workday.

Through trial and error, I found that de-cat-proofing my office was about creating a balance between maintaining a functional workspace for myself and ensuring my cat had enough to keep her entertained and comfortable. By making a few small adjustments, I was able to create a peaceful and productive environment where both of us could thrive.
